AM5 motherboards

AM5 motherboards

AM5 motherboards are built for AMD Ryzen desktop processors and suit gamers, home builders and workstation users replacing or starting a PC. Our range of over 400 models covers ATX, micro ATX and mini ITX boards from GIGABYTE, ASRock, ASUS and MSI, among others.

How to choose an AM5 motherboard

Chipset. The chipset decides how many PCIe lanes, USB ports and storage options you get. Entry-level A620 boards keep costs down, B650 and B850 boards suit most gaming and general builds, and X670 and X870 boards add more connectivity and usually stronger power delivery for demanding processors.

Form factor. ATX boards offer the most expansion slots and M.2 sockets, while micro ATX boards fit smaller cases with fewer slots. Mini ITX boards are for very small builds and are a minority in our range. Check which sizes your case supports before ordering.

Memory. AM5 boards take DDR5 only, so DDR4 modules from an older PC will not fit. Where the maximum supported memory is listed in our range, 256 GB is the most frequent figure, with some boards at 192 GB, 128 GB or 96 GB. For most home and gaming PCs this limit is far above what you will install, but it matters for video editing or virtual machines.

M.2 and SATA storage. Boards in our range list anywhere from one to five M.2 slots, and two, three or four slots are the usual choices. Four SATA III ports is the most common figure listed, which is enough for a few extra drives. Check which M.2 slots connect directly to the processor, as these are usually the fastest.

Connectivity. Most boards in our range have one Ethernet port, and a few have two for networking setups. Look at the rear panel for the USB types you need, and check whether the board includes Wi-Fi if you cannot run a cable to your PC.

AM5 motherboard FAQ

Which processors work with an AM5 motherboard?

AM5 boards work with AMD Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 series desktop processors. Some older boards may need a BIOS update before they recognise the newest processors, so check the manufacturer's compatibility list for your exact board and CPU.

Can I use DDR4 memory on an AM5 motherboard?

No, AM5 motherboards support DDR5 memory only. DDR4 modules have a different notch position and will not fit the slots. If you are upgrading from an AM4 system, plan to buy new memory as well.

What is the difference between B650 and X670 boards?

X670 boards generally offer more PCIe lanes, more USB ports and stronger power delivery than B650 boards. B650 boards cover what most gamers and home users need, including fast M.2 storage and DDR5 support. X670 suits builds with several storage drives, expansion cards or high-end processors.

Should I choose ATX or micro ATX?

Choose ATX if you want more M.2 slots, expansion slots and ports, and your case is a standard mid tower. Micro ATX is the better fit for a smaller case and a simpler build with one graphics card and one or two drives. Always check the case specification, as not every small case accepts a full ATX board.
