Camera filters

Camera filters

Camera filters in our range include UV and protective filters, circular polarisers, neutral density (ND) and variable ND filters, and filter sets for DSLR, mirrorless and drone cameras. They suit photographers and video shooters who want to control reflections, manage exposure or protect the front of a lens. Leading brands include HAMA, K&F, CALUMET and FREEWELL.

How to choose camera filters

Filter type. Pick the filter by the problem you want to solve. A circular polariser cuts glare on water and glass and deepens blue skies, an ND filter lets you use slow shutter speeds or wide apertures in bright light, and a clear or UV filter simply protects the glass.

Thread size. Screw-in filters must match the filter thread of your lens, which is printed on the front of the lens as a diameter in millimetres, such as 67 mm or 77 mm. If you own several lenses, buy for the largest thread and use inexpensive step-up rings to fit smaller ones.

ND strength. Fixed ND filters are sold by how many stops of light they block. A weaker filter suits video and portraits in daylight, while a strong one is needed for long exposures of water or clouds. A variable ND filter covers a range in one piece of glass, but very strong settings on cheap versions can cause uneven darkening or colour shifts.

Glass, coatings and mounting. Multi-coated optical glass keeps flare and colour casts down, and a slim frame avoids dark corners on wide-angle lenses. Beyond classic screw-in filters, our range includes magnetic systems, which are quicker to swap in the field, and square or rectangular filters that sit in a holder.

Camera filter brands we carry

  • HAMA: German accessories brand with a large photo range, so its filters are easy to find in common thread sizes.
  • K&F: known for ND, variable ND and polarising filters, as well as magnetic and square filter systems.
  • CALUMET: a photography specialist brand offering filters for general shooting and protection.
  • FREEWELL: focuses on magnetic filter systems, including filters for drones and action cameras.
  • HOYA: Japanese optical glass maker, widely used by photographers for polarisers and protective filters.
  • B+W: made by Schneider Kreuznach in Germany and known for brass-framed filters with durable coatings.
  • DJI, CANON and MOMENT: filters designed for their own drones, lenses and mobile camera systems, which helps when fit matters more than universal sizing.

Also in our range: WALIMEX, BRAUN and VAONIS.

Camera filter FAQ

Do I need a UV filter on my lens?

No, you do not need one for image quality, because modern lens coatings and sensors already deal with ultraviolet light well. Many photographers still keep a clear or UV filter on as a cheap shield against scratches, dust and fingerprints. Choose a multi-coated one to avoid extra reflections.

What does a circular polariser do?

A circular polariser reduces reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, leaves and windows. It also darkens blue skies and increases colour saturation. You rotate the front ring until the effect looks right, and it works with autofocus and metering on modern cameras.

Which ND filter should I buy for long exposures?

For smooth water or moving clouds in daylight, a strong ND filter, around 6 to 10 stops, is the usual choice. A weaker filter of 1 to 3 stops is better for video or wide apertures in sunshine. A variable ND filter is flexible, but a fixed filter is generally more consistent at the extremes.

How do I find the right filter size?

Check the front of your lens or its manual for the filter thread, shown in millimetres after the diameter symbol. Buy a filter with exactly that number, or use a step-up ring to fit a larger filter. Drone and action camera filters are usually sold for a specific model, so match the model name instead.
