Document cameras

Document cameras

Document cameras, also called visualisers, are overhead cameras that show paper, books, objects and handwriting on a screen or in a video call. This category suits teachers, trainers and anyone who presents printed material. Our range includes models from Optoma, AVer and AVerMedia.

How to choose a document camera

Image resolution. Full HD is enough for A4 pages and everyday classroom use. A 4K sensor helps when you need to show fine print, small components or a wide area in detail, so check the sensor resolution rather than only the output resolution.

Frame rate and focus. A frame rate of around 30 frames per second keeps hand movements and live demonstrations smooth. Autofocus saves time when you switch between a flat page and a three-dimensional object, and a manual focus option is useful for awkward subjects.

Connections. USB lets you use the camera with a laptop and video-calling software. HDMI output sends the image straight to a projector or display without a computer. Check which ports your room already uses before you order.

Capture area and stand design. Look at the maximum capture area, usually A4 or A3, and whether the arm folds flat for carrying between rooms. Built-in LED lighting helps in a dim room or with glossy paper that reflects ceiling lights.

Software and recording. Some document cameras come with software for annotating, recording and saving snapshots of what is on the desk. Confirm that it works with your operating system, whether Windows or macOS, and with the platform your school or office uses.

Document camera brands we carry

  • Optoma: best known for projectors and interactive displays, so its document cameras fit easily into classrooms and meeting rooms that already use its screens.
  • AVer: a Taiwanese company focused on education and video conferencing technology, with document cameras as a long-established product line.
  • AVerMedia: known for capture cards and streaming hardware, which shows in its interest in video quality and live presentation tools.

Document cameras: frequently asked questions

What is a document camera used for?

A document camera is used to show physical material to a group, either on a screen or over a video call. Teachers use it to display textbooks, worksheets and experiments, while presenters use it for printed reports, drawings and small objects. It replaces the old overhead projector and works with modern projectors, displays and laptops.

Is a document camera better than a scanner?

A document camera is better when you want to show something live, and a scanner is better when you want a flat, high-quality digital copy. A document camera can display three-dimensional objects and handwriting as you write, which a scanner cannot do. For archiving many pages, a scanner is usually faster and gives more even results.

Can I use a document camera with Zoom or Teams?

Many document cameras can be used with Zoom and Microsoft Teams through a USB connection, where the computer sees the camera as a webcam. You then select it as your video source in the meeting settings. Check the product specification to confirm USB output and your operating system support.

Do I need a projector to use a document camera?

No, a projector is not required. A document camera can connect to a monitor, a television or an interactive display with an HDMI cable, or to a computer over USB. A projector is only needed when you want to show the image to a large room.
