Expansion and controller cards

Expansion and controller cards are add-in boards that give a desktop PC or server extra ports and functions: additional USB and SATA connections, RAID and HBA storage controllers, serial ports and other interface cards. They suit anyone upgrading an older machine or building a workstation, file server or industrial system that needs more connections than the motherboard offers.

How to choose an expansion or controller card

Slot type and lane count. Check which free slot your motherboard has before anything else: PCIe x1, x4, x8 or x16, or an older PCI slot. A shorter card fits into a longer slot, but a card needs enough electrical lanes to reach its full speed, and some motherboard slots are longer than the number of lanes they actually carry.

Interface and port type. Match the card to the devices you plan to connect. USB 3.x cards, SATA controllers, SAS host adapters, M.2 NVMe adapters and serial RS-232 cards each solve a different problem, so count the ports you need and add a little headroom for later.

Controller chipset and software support. The chip on the card decides which operating systems and drivers it works with. Check support for Windows 11, Linux or your server software, especially for storage cards, where an HBA that passes drives straight through suits software RAID setups, while a hardware RAID card manages the array itself.

Bandwidth. All ports on a card share the bandwidth of its slot connection. A four-port SATA card on a single PCIe x1 lane can hold back fast SSDs, and a high-speed USB card needs enough lanes to deliver the speed printed on the box.

Bracket size and power. Small cases need a low-profile bracket, which is often a separate part from the standard full-height one. Some cards also need a SATA or Molex power connector for the devices on them, and RAID cards tend to run warm, so leave some airflow around them.

Brands in this category

  • Chipset makers: Many cards are built around controller chips from a small group of silicon vendors, so two cards with different labels can behave very similarly when they share a chip. The chipset name in the specification is the best guide to driver support.
  • Card manufacturers: They decide the port layout, bracket type and power connectors around the chip, which is why two cards with the same controller can differ in how easily they fit your case.
  • Server and storage vendors: RAID and HBA cards are often supplied with vendor-specific firmware, so check that a card works with your server or drive backplane before ordering.

No brands are listed in this category at the moment, so use the chipset and compatibility details on each product page to compare cards as they are added.

Frequently asked questions about expansion and controller cards

What does an expansion card do?

An expansion card adds a function or extra ports to a computer through a slot on the motherboard. Typical examples are more USB ports, extra SATA or SAS connections, serial ports and storage controllers. It is a common way to upgrade a PC without replacing the motherboard.

Can I use a PCIe x1 card in an x16 slot?

Yes, a PCIe x1 card normally works in a longer slot such as x16, running at x1 speed. The reverse is only possible if the slot is open-ended or the card is designed for fewer lanes than the slot has. Always check which slots on your motherboard are free and how many lanes each one carries.

What is the difference between a RAID controller and an HBA?

A RAID controller manages drives as an array itself, while an HBA (host bus adapter) passes the drives through to the operating system. HBAs suit software-defined storage and systems where the OS handles redundancy. Hardware RAID cards suit setups where you want the card to build and manage the array.

Do I need to install drivers for a controller card?

Many USB and basic SATA cards work with the drivers already built into Windows 11 and Linux. RAID cards, SAS adapters and specialised serial cards usually need drivers or firmware from the chip or card manufacturer. Check the operating system support listed for the card before you buy.
