NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 series and older graphics cards

This category covers desktop graphics cards built on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 series GPUs and earlier generations, including RTX 30, RTX 20 and GTX models. It suits gamers, video editors and 3D artists who want to upgrade an existing PC or build a new one around an NVIDIA GPU.

Cards range from entry-level models for 1080p gaming to high-end ones aimed at 4K and creative work.

How to choose an NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics card

Resolution and frame rate. Match the card to your monitor, not to the newest name on the box. A mid-range RTX 40 or RTX 30 card handles 1080p at high refresh rates, while 1440p and 4K gaming call for a faster GPU in the RTX 4070 class or above.

Video memory. 8 GB is the practical minimum for current games at 1080p, and 12 GB or more gives headroom at 1440p and for high-resolution textures. For 4K, heavy 3D rendering or large video projects, look at 16 GB or more. A card with more memory will stay useful for longer.

Generation and features. RTX 40 series cards add DLSS 3 frame generation and AV1 video encoding, which help with demanding games and streaming. RTX 30 and RTX 20 cards still support ray tracing and DLSS upscaling, so they remain sensible for lower budgets. GTX cards have no ray tracing hardware and suit lighter gaming and office or media machines.

Power supply and connectors. Check the power supply wattage recommended by the card manufacturer and count the available PCIe power cables. Some high-end RTX 40 cards use the 12VHPWR connector, usually supplied with an adapter, so leave enough space for the cable to bend without strain.

Size and case fit. Many faster cards are long and occupy two to four expansion slots. Measure the clearance in your case before ordering, and check that the neighbouring slots and motherboard layout leave room.

Brands we carry

  • NVIDIA: the designer of the GeForce GPUs in this category, known for RTX ray tracing hardware and DLSS upscaling, which most cards from the RTX 20 series onwards support.

Individual cards are sold under the names of the manufacturers that build them around NVIDIA GPUs, so check the product listing for the maker, cooler design and warranty terms.

Frequently asked questions about RTX 40 series and older graphics cards

Is an RTX 40 series card worth it over an RTX 30 series card?

It depends on the model and what you play. RTX 40 cards are more power efficient and add DLSS 3 frame generation, which can raise frame rates noticeably in supported games. If you play older titles or at 1080p, a good RTX 30 card often delivers all the performance you need.

How much video memory do I need?

For 1080p gaming, 8 GB is the minimum worth considering today. For 1440p, 12 GB or more is safer, and for 4K or demanding creative work, 16 GB or more is a better fit. Memory size matters most when you use high texture settings or large projects.

Will a new graphics card work in an older PC?

Usually yes, because PCIe slots are backwards compatible, so a card will work in an older motherboard, possibly with slightly reduced bandwidth. The more important limits are the power supply, the physical space in the case and how well your processor keeps up with the card.

Are GTX cards still worth buying?

They can be, for light gaming, esports titles at modest settings, or a basic media and office build. They lack ray tracing and DLSS, so for newer games and longer-term use an RTX card is the better investment.
