Dot matrix printers

Dot matrix printers

Dot matrix printers are impact printers that strike an ink ribbon to print on continuous forms and multipart paper, which suits invoices, delivery notes, warehouse paperwork and receipts. Our range of over 20 models includes brands such as EPSON, CITIZEN, OKI and STAR MICRONICS.

How to choose a dot matrix printer

Print head pins. A 9-pin head is the usual choice for fast, draft-quality output such as delivery notes and logs. A 24-pin head produces sharper text and suits invoices and documents that customers will read.

Carriage width. Narrow models take paper of about 80 columns, enough for A4 forms and most invoices. Wide carriage models handle 136 columns for spreadsheets, stock listings and large continuous forms, so check the widest paper you actually use before buying.

Multipart forms and paper feed. If you print carbon or NCR copies, check how many parts the printer supports, as this varies between models. Continuous paper normally runs on a tractor feed, while some models also accept single sheets, which helps if you switch between forms and plain paper.

Connections. Older systems often depend on parallel or serial ports, whereas newer set-ups use USB or Ethernet. Match the interface to your computer or point-of-sale system, because adapters can cause driver problems.

Ribbons and duty cycle. A ribbon lasts a long time, so running costs are low compared with many other printer types. A model with a high rated duty cycle is worth considering if it will print all day in a warehouse or workshop, and it helps to confirm that ribbons for your chosen model are easy to find.

Dot matrix printers: frequently asked questions

What is a dot matrix printer used for?

A dot matrix printer is used mainly for printing multipart forms, invoices, delivery notes, packing slips and continuous-feed paperwork. Because it prints by impact, it can produce several copies in one pass. This is why it remains common in warehouses, workshops, logistics and accounts departments.

What is the difference between a 9-pin and a 24-pin dot matrix printer?

A 24-pin printer uses more pins in the print head, so it produces finer, more legible text than a 9-pin model. A 9-pin printer is usually quicker in draft mode and perfectly adequate for internal documents. Choose 24-pin if the printout goes to customers, and 9-pin if speed and simple records matter more.

Can a dot matrix printer print carbon copies?

Yes, a dot matrix printer can print carbon or NCR copies because the pins physically strike through the layers of paper. The number of copies you can make depends on the model, so check the stated number of parts before buying. Inkjet and laser printers cannot do this.

Are dot matrix printers still worth buying?

Yes, if your work needs multipart forms, continuous paper or very low running costs. They are slower and noisier than laser printers and are not suited to photos or graphics. For everyday office documents, a laser or inkjet printer is usually the better fit.
