Hair clippers

Hair clippers

Hair clippers and beard trimmers for home use, from people who cut their own hair to parents keeping a child's cut tidy between salon visits. The range covers mains, cordless and mixed-power models from Philips, Adler, Braun and Remington.

How to choose a hair clipper

Shortest cutting length. This sets how close the clipper can cut. Some models in our range go down to 0.5 mm, which leaves hair almost at skin level, while others start at 1 mm or 3 mm. If you want a close fade or a clean-shaven finish, check this figure first.

Longest length and guards. Maximum hair length in our range is around 2.1 to 2.8 cm on the models that list it. That suits short styles and beard work. If you like to leave more length on top, check how many guard combs are included and what lengths they cover.

Power source. Our range includes battery-only, mains-only and combined mains and battery models. Cordless clippers are easier to move around the head, and a model that also works on the mains is useful when the battery runs low. Mains-only models never run flat but limit how you can move.

Battery type. Most rechargeable models have a built-in battery, which you charge and do not replace. Some models run on AA batteries, so you can swap them on the spot, but you need spares or rechargeable cells to hand.

Body use and cleaning. Not every clipper is meant for use below the neck. Some models in our range state that they suit the entire body, others do not, so read the product details before using one on your chest or legs. Washable or removable blades make cleaning much easier.

  • Braun: a German brand known for electric shavers and precise beard and body trimmers.
  • Remington: a long-established grooming brand that has made hair clippers and shavers for home use for decades.

Also in our range: Adler.

Hair clipper FAQ

What is the difference between a hair clipper and a trimmer?

A hair clipper is built to cut hair on the head to a chosen length, usually with guard combs. A trimmer has finer, narrower blades for edging, beards and detail work. Many home models do both jobs, so look at the cutting lengths and attachments rather than the name.

Which length setting gives a buzz cut?

A buzz cut is made with a short guard, usually a few millimetres, and the lower the number, the shorter the hair. Start with a longer guard and work down, because you cannot put hair back once it is cut. A clipper with a minimum length of 0.5 mm to 3 mm covers most very short styles.

Are cordless hair clippers better than corded ones?

Cordless clippers are easier to handle and move around, while corded ones do not rely on battery charge. Models that work on both mains and battery give you the choice. The better option depends on whether you value freedom of movement or constant power.

Can I use a hair clipper on my body?

Only if the manufacturer says the model is suitable for it. In our range, some clippers are listed as suitable for the entire body and others are not. Using a head clipper on sensitive areas can irritate the skin, so check the product details first.
