Home and study laptops

Home and study laptops

Home and study laptops are everyday notebooks for coursework, online lessons, browsing, video calls and household admin. Our range of over 50 models runs from 14-inch to 17.3-inch screens, mainly from Acer, Lenovo and HP, with Dell and ASUS also available.

How to choose a home or study laptop

Screen size and resolution. A 14-inch or 15.6-inch screen is easier to carry between lectures, while 16-inch and 17.3-inch models give more room for documents side by side. The 16-inch size is the most common in our range, and many laptops here have a 1920 x 1200 display, which shows slightly more of a page than standard Full HD.

Processor. Intel Core i5, Intel Core 5 and AMD Ryzen 5 handle office software, streaming and dozens of browser tabs without trouble. Step up to a Ryzen 7 or Intel Core Ultra 7 only if you also edit photos or video. One model in our range uses a Qualcomm processor, and laptops with that kind of Arm chip can be less compatible with some older Windows programs, so check your software first.

Memory and storage. A 512 GB SSD suits most students and families, and it is the capacity found on most laptops here. Choose 1 TB or more if you keep large photo libraries, downloaded videos or many offline files. As a general guide, 8 GB of RAM is the minimum for smooth multitasking and 16 GB gives more headroom for years of use.

Graphics. Nearly all laptops in this category use the graphics built into the processor, which is enough for schoolwork, video and casual games. One model in our range has a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050, worth considering for design coursework, light 3D work or more demanding games.

Operating system. Most laptops here ship with Windows 11 Home, which covers everything a household needs. Windows 11 Pro adds business features such as device encryption management and remote desktop hosting. A model with FreeDOS has no Windows licence included, so you would need to install an operating system yourself.

Brands we carry

  • Acer: known for affordable everyday laptops that often offer a larger screen or more storage for the money than rivals.
  • Lenovo: widely recognised for comfortable keyboards and a home and student range that covers both budget and mid-range models.
  • HP: a long-established laptop maker with a large home and student line-up, and a common choice for families buying a first laptop.
  • Dell: built its name on business computers, so its laptops often carry sturdy construction and straightforward support options.
  • ASUS: recognised for slim, light notebooks and for offering vivid screens on some models.

Also in our range: MEDION.

Frequently asked questions about home and study laptops

What screen size is best for a study laptop?

A 15.6-inch or 16-inch screen suits most students, because it is large enough for two windows side by side yet still fits a standard backpack. Choose 14 inches if you carry the laptop all day. A 17.3-inch model makes sense when it mostly stays on a desk.

Is 512 GB of storage enough for a student?

Yes, 512 GB is enough for most students. It holds Windows, office programs, coursework and a reasonable amount of photos and music. If you store many videos or large project files, pick 1 TB or use cloud storage or an external drive.

Do I need a dedicated graphics card for studying?

No, most study tasks run well on the integrated graphics inside the processor. Writing, research, video calls and streaming do not need a separate graphics card. A dedicated card such as the GeForce RTX 2050 only matters for 3D modelling, heavier creative software or gaming.

Should I choose an Intel or AMD processor?

Either works well for home and study use, so compare the specific model rather than the brand. A Core i5, Core 5 or Ryzen 5 is a sound starting point for everyday tasks. Check the processor generation and the amount of RAM, as these affect speed more than the manufacturer name.
