How to choose surveillance camera accessories
Compatibility. Check that the accessory is made for your camera model or series. Mounts, housings and covers are usually shaped for specific camera bodies, so the model number matters more than the brand name alone.
Power supply. Find out whether your camera runs on Power over Ethernet (PoE) or on a separate DC supply, and note the voltage and PoE class it needs. A PoE injector or midspan must provide enough power for the camera, and for any heater or illuminator attached to it.
Lighting for night footage. An infrared illuminator extends the distance and evenness of night images beyond what built-in LEDs can manage. Look at the beam angle, which should match the camera's field of view, and at the range. Wavelength also matters: 850 nm gives better images but a faint red glow, while 940 nm is nearly invisible.
Weather and location. Outdoor installations need accessories with a suitable IP rating and an operating temperature range that fits your climate. Cable glands, junction boxes and metal brackets should be rated for the same conditions as the camera, or the weakest part will fail first.
Batteries and chargers. For battery-powered cameras and wireless devices, check the cell type and size before buying. Rechargeable cells save money on devices that are drained often, while standard alkaline cells suit devices that are changed rarely.

What accessories does an IP camera need?
At minimum, an IP camera needs a mount and a way to be powered, either a PoE switch or injector or a DC power supply. Outdoor cameras often also need a weatherproof junction box or housing. Night coverage may call for a separate infrared illuminator.
Do I need a PoE injector for my security camera?
You need one only if the camera uses PoE and your network switch does not supply PoE itself. The injector adds power to the same network cable that carries the video. Make sure its power output meets the camera's PoE class.
What does an infrared illuminator do for a camera?
An infrared illuminator lights a scene with light that people cannot see well, so a camera can record clear black and white images in the dark. It is most helpful when the camera's own LEDs do not reach far enough. A narrow beam reaches further, while a wide beam covers a broader area.
Can I use accessories from a different brand?
Often yes for generic items such as batteries, power supplies and illuminators, as long as the voltage and connectors match. Brand-specific items such as mounts and housings are normally made for particular camera models, so check fit before buying. If in doubt, compare the model numbers listed for compatibility.
