Laptop security locks

Laptop security locks

Laptop security locks are cable locks and related anchoring devices that secure a notebook to a desk or other fixed object. They suit offices, schools, shared workspaces and anyone who leaves a laptop unattended. Our range includes keyed, combination and master-keyed models from Kensington, Compulocks, StarTech and LINDY.

How to choose a laptop security lock

Security slot type. Check the slot on your laptop before anything else. Most business notebooks have a standard rectangular slot, but some thin models use a smaller Nano slot or a wedge-shaped slot, and the lock head must match. Some laptops have no slot at all, and these need an adhesive or clamp-on adapter.

Key or combination. A keyed lock is quick to use, and a master key lets an IT department open every lock in a fleet. A combination lock means nobody has to carry or lose a key, which suits shared desks and hot-desking. Keyed-alike and master-keyed sets are worth considering when you are buying for more than a few devices.

Cable and build quality. A thick steel cable is much harder to cut than a thin one. Our range includes locks made from carbon steel, galvanised steel and zinc steel, with ABS plastic used for housings and lock heads. Most cables are around two metres long, which is enough to loop round a table leg or a fixed desk anchor.

What you anchor it to. A lock is only as secure as the object it is attached to. Loop it round a heavy desk frame, a fixed pillar or a purpose-made anchor point, never a light chair or a removable panel. For permanent desks, a lock with a fixed mounting plate or a bolt-down anchor is more robust than a loose cable.

Laptop security lock brands we carry

  • Kensington: created the Kensington Security Slot, so its name is used for the lock standard that most laptops follow.
  • Compulocks: known for security enclosures, stands and mounts for tablets and displays, as well as cable locks for laptops.
  • StarTech: a maker of connectivity accessories, including cables, adapters and docking products that often sit alongside laptop locks.
  • LINDY: a connectivity and computer accessories specialist with a long history in cables and adapters for offices.
  • DICOTA: known mainly for laptop bags, cases and sleeves, so its locks are a natural addition to a mobile working kit.
  • HP and Lenovo: notebook manufacturers whose locks are designed to work with their own business laptops.
  • Targus: a long-established name in laptop bags and mobile accessories.

Also in our range: LogiLink, REINER SCT, AXIS and ACT.

Laptop security lock FAQ

What is a Kensington lock?

A Kensington lock is a cable lock that fits into a small reinforced security slot on the side or back of a laptop. The other end of the cable loops round a fixed object such as a desk. The name comes from Kensington, which introduced the slot design that most manufacturers now follow.

Do all laptops have a security slot?

No. Most business laptops have one, but some very thin or consumer models leave it out. Check the edges of your laptop for a small lock symbol next to a narrow slot. If there is none, you can use a lock with an adhesive or clamp-on security plate instead.

Should I buy a key lock or a combination lock?

Choose a key lock if one person or an IT team manages the locks, particularly with a master key. Choose a combination lock if several people share a workstation and you want to avoid lost keys. Both give the same physical protection, so the choice comes down to how you work.

Can a laptop lock stop theft completely?

No. A cable lock deters opportunistic theft and makes taking the laptop slower and more noticeable, but a determined thief with cutting tools can defeat any cable. A thick steel cable and a solid anchor point make that much harder. Pair the lock with a strong login password and disk encryption to protect your data too.
