UPS

UPS

This category holds uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) that keep a computer, router or small workstation running when the mains drops out. It suits home offices, small businesses and anyone who wants time to save work and shut down safely. Our range is small and covers three brands: Eaton, Bachmann and Avacom.

How to choose a UPS

Capacity. Add up the wattage of everything you plan to plug in, then choose a UPS with a watt rating comfortably above that total. VA figures are always higher than watt figures, so compare watts where both are listed. A desktop PC with a monitor needs far more than a router on its own.

Runtime. Battery runtime depends on the load and the battery size. Most small units give a few minutes at full load, which is enough to save and shut down, while keeping a light load running for longer needs a lighter load or a larger battery.

UPS type. Standby (offline) units are the simplest and cover basic PCs. Line-interactive models add automatic voltage regulation, which helps where the supply is unstable. Online double-conversion units feed equipment clean power all the time and are normally chosen for servers and sensitive hardware.

Outlets and connections. Check how many sockets are battery-backed, which socket type they use and whether they match your plugs. A USB or network port lets the UPS tell your computer to shut down automatically when the battery runs low.

Battery replacement. The battery inside a UPS wears out after a few years, whatever the brand. Look for a model with a replaceable battery, so the unit does not have to be thrown away when the battery fades.

UPS brands we carry

  • Eaton: a power management company known for UPS systems from small desktop units to data centre installations, including line-interactive and online designs.
  • Bachmann: an Austrian manufacturer best known for power strips, socket outlets and power distribution units for offices and installations.
  • Avacom: a Czech brand known for replacement batteries, including batteries for UPS units and laptops.

With only a few models listed, compare each one against your own load and socket needs before ordering.

UPS frequently asked questions

What size UPS do I need for a desktop PC?

Choose a UPS whose watt rating is at least 20 to 30 per cent above the combined draw of your PC, monitor and any other devices on it. Check the power supply rating on the PC as an upper limit, although the real draw is usually lower. Buying with some spare capacity also puts less strain on the battery.

How long will a UPS keep my computer running?

A typical small UPS keeps a desktop PC running for a few minutes at full load. That is meant to give you time to save files and shut down properly. Lower loads and larger batteries extend the runtime, but a standard UPS is not a substitute for a generator.

What is the difference between line-interactive and online UPS?

A line-interactive UPS passes mains power through and corrects voltage swings, switching to battery only when the supply fails. An online UPS converts incoming power continuously, so equipment always runs from the inverter with no switchover. Online units cost more and suit servers and sensitive equipment, while line-interactive models are enough for most home and office PCs.

Can a UPS keep my router running during load shedding?

Yes, a UPS can keep a router and fibre equipment running for a while, because they draw very little power. How long depends on the battery size and what else is connected. Many routers run on a low-voltage DC adapter, so check that the adapter can be plugged into the UPS sockets.
