Laptop memory

Laptop memory

Laptop memory in our range means SO-DIMM RAM modules for notebooks, from older DDR2 and DDR3 replacements to current DDR4 and DDR5. It suits anyone repairing, refreshing or expanding a laptop. Brands include Kingston, Crucial, Corsair and G.SKILL, alongside Lenovo, HP and Dell modules.

How to choose laptop memory

Memory generation. Your laptop accepts only one generation, and the generations are not interchangeable. Our range includes DDR4 (the largest group), DDR3L, DDR3, DDR5 and DDR2. Check the specification sheet or the existing module's label before ordering.

Physical fit. SO-DIMM modules differ in pin count by generation: 200 pins for DDR2, 204 for DDR3 and DDR3L, 260 for DDR4 and 262 for DDR5. A few 288-pin full-size DIMMs and PC or server modules also appear in the category, and these will not fit a laptop slot. Look for the label saying the module is for a laptop.

Capacity. Our modules range from 2 GB to 32 GB, with 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB the most common. 8 GB is a workable minimum for current Windows use, while 16 GB or more helps with many browser tabs, virtual machines or photo and video editing. Check the maximum your laptop supports first, as many older models have a lower limit.

Speed and latency. Clock speeds in our range run from 800 MHz on DDR2 up to 3200 MHz on DDR4. Latency (CAS) values vary by generation, so compare them only between modules of the same type. If a laptop runs at a fixed speed, faster memory will usually be slowed down to match it, so buying the fastest module gains nothing there.

Single modules or kits. Most listings are single modules, such as 1 x 8 GB or 1 x 16 GB. A matched kit of two modules, for example 2 x 16 GB, lets the laptop run dual-channel, which usually improves performance for integrated graphics. ECC memory is rare here and only works in systems built to support it, so ordinary laptops do not need it.

Laptop memory brands we carry

  • Kingston: known for its ValueRAM modules for everyday upgrades and its FURY line for higher-speed memory.
  • Crucial: the consumer memory brand of Micron, a chipmaker that produces its own DRAM.
  • Corsair: best known for Vengeance memory, which includes SO-DIMM versions aimed at faster DDR4 and DDR5 laptops.
  • G.SKILL: a name from the enthusiast and overclocking scene, with Ripjaws SO-DIMM kits for gaming notebooks and mini PCs.
  • Patriot Memory: offers both standard Signature modules and the performance-oriented Viper range.
  • Transcend: sells the JetRam series of laptop modules, with a focus on straightforward upgrades.
  • Lenovo, HP and Dell: original manufacturer modules, useful when you want exactly the part that suits a particular ThinkPad, ProBook, Latitude or similar model.

Also in our range: 2-POWER and CoreParts.

Laptop memory FAQ

How do I find out which RAM my laptop uses?

Check the laptop's model number against the manufacturer's specification page, which lists the memory type, speed and maximum capacity. You can also read the label on the installed module or use a system information tool in Windows. The key details are the generation (DDR3, DDR4 or DDR5) and the maximum supported size.

How much RAM does a laptop need?

8 GB is enough for office work, web browsing and video calls. 16 GB is a sensible target for multitasking, programming or light creative work. 32 GB suits virtual machines and heavy editing, provided the laptop supports that capacity.

Can I use DDR4 memory in a DDR5 laptop?

No. DDR4 and DDR5 SO-DIMMs have different pin counts (260 and 262) and a different notch position, so they cannot be installed in each other's slots. The same applies to DDR3 and DDR4. Always buy the generation your laptop was built for.

Can I mix different RAM modules in one laptop?

Often yes, if both modules are the same generation, but results vary. The laptop usually runs both at the speed of the slower module, and mismatched sizes can disable dual-channel mode. For the most stable result, use two identical modules or a matched kit.
