How to choose a mobile or wearable barcode scanner
Wearable or handheld. A wearable scanner sits on a finger or hand, which frees both hands for picking, packing and loading. A handheld reader is easier to pass between staff and suits occasional scanning. Most models in our range are wearable bar code readers, with a smaller number of handheld ones.
1D or 2D scanning. A 1D scanner reads traditional linear barcodes only. A 2D scanner also reads QR codes and Data Matrix codes, and can read codes displayed on a screen, such as mobile tickets and loyalty cards. Most models in our range with this specification are 2D, and some are 1D/2D, so check which code types you need to read before ordering.
Connectivity. Wireless scanners, usually Bluetooth, move freely and pair with a phone, tablet or mobile computer. Wired scanners need no pairing and no battery management, but the cable limits movement. Our range includes wireless, wired and combined wired and wireless models, which helps if you want a cable as a backup.
Operating temperature. Cold stores, loading bays and outdoor work put strain on electronics and batteries. Some scanners in our range are specified for -30 to 50 °C, while others cover 0 to 50 °C. The wider range is the safer choice for freezer or yard use, and the narrower one is enough for indoor retail and offices.
Device compatibility. Check that the scanner supports the operating system and app you use, whether that is iOS, Android or Windows. A scanner that works as a keyboard input device needs little setup, whereas one that depends on a manufacturer app needs software support on your device.
