USB-A cables

USB-A cables connect devices that use the familiar rectangular USB-A port, such as laptops, desktop PCs, wall chargers, printers and USB hubs. The main types are USB-A to USB-C, USB-A to micro-USB, USB-A to USB-B and USB-A extension cables.

This category suits anyone replacing a worn lead or matching a cable to a specific device.

How to choose a USB-A cable

Connector on the other end. Check the port on your device before anything else. Phones and tablets use USB-C or micro-USB, printers and scanners often use the squarer USB-B, and some accessories use mini-USB. A USB-A extension cable has a male plug on one end and a female socket on the other, so it only lengthens an existing connection.

USB standard and data speed. Most basic USB-A cables follow USB 2.0, which is enough for charging, keyboards, mice and occasional file transfers. USB 3.0 and newer standards are much faster and suit external hard drives, SSDs and webcams. They are usually marked with a blue plug or an SS logo, though the colour is not a guarantee.

Length. Choose the shortest cable that reaches comfortably. Short leads of around 0.5 to 1 metre keep a desk tidy and lose less power. Cables of 2 to 3 metres suit a charger across the room. USB 2.0 cables can run up to about 5 metres, while USB 3.x cables are usually kept shorter to hold their speed.

Charging or data use. Some cheap leads carry power only, and others are built mainly for data. If you want both, look for a cable described as charge and sync. For fast charging, thicker internal wires and a firm moulded connector make a noticeable difference.

Build quality. Braided sleeves and reinforced strain relief where the cable meets the plug help leads that are bent and pulled every day. A thin, flimsy cable is fine for a drawer spare, but not for a phone charger used daily.

Brands and labels to look for

  • USB-IF certification: the USB Implementers Forum is the body that sets the USB standards, and a certified cable has been tested against them for speed and safe power delivery.
  • Printer and peripheral brands: manufacturers of printers and external drives often supply their own USB-A cable, which makes a good template when buying a spare.
  • Braided cables: cloth or nylon sleeving is common among accessory makers and resists tangling and fraying better than a plain PVC jacket.
  • Original equipment leads: the cable that came with a phone or camera is a useful reference for the right connector and length.

Specific brands are shown on each product page, so compare the standard, length and connector type listed there before choosing.

USB-A cables: frequently asked questions

Can I plug a USB-A cable into a USB-C port?

Not directly, because the two plugs have different shapes. You need either a USB-A to USB-C cable or a small USB-C adapter. A USB-A to USB-C cable is usually the simpler option, as it avoids an extra part that can come loose.

What is the difference between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 cables?

The main difference is data speed. USB 3.0 transfers data far faster than USB 2.0, which matters for external drives and large files. For charging a phone or connecting a mouse, a USB 2.0 cable works well.

Why does my USB-A cable charge so slowly?

A thin or damaged cable, a low-output charger or a power-only design are the usual causes. Cables with thin internal wires limit the current they can carry. Try a shorter, better-built cable and check that the charger can supply enough power for your device.

How long can a USB-A cable be?

A USB 2.0 cable can run up to about 5 metres before the signal weakens. USB 3.x cables are usually shorter, often around 3 metres or less. For longer distances, an active extension cable or a powered hub is the safer solution.
