Privacy screen filters

Privacy screen filters

Privacy screen filters darken a display when it is viewed from the side, so only the person sitting directly in front can read it. Our range of over 250 filters covers laptops, monitors and tablets, from brands such as ESTUFF, DICOTA, StarTech.com, Qoltec and 3M.

How to choose a privacy screen filter

Screen size and aspect ratio. A filter has to match your screen's diagonal and proportions, otherwise it will leave gaps or overhang the edges. Our range includes 16:9 and 16:10 (the most common), plus 3:2, 5:4, 21:9 and 32:9 for tablets, older monitors and ultrawides. Check the exact size in the product details, not just the diagonal in inches.

Device type. Most filters are made for laptops or monitors, and a smaller number for tablets and netbooks. A laptop filter is usually thin and light enough to stay in a bag, whereas a monitor filter is more often fitted once and left in place.

Fitting method. Magnetic filters go on and come off quickly, which suits a laptop you open in different places. Adhesive strips with slide mount tabs hold a filter firmly while still letting you remove it. Full adhesive filters stick to the whole screen and are better suited to a monitor that stays at one desk. Some filters also use flip attach or attachment strips.

Viewing angle. A narrower angle hides the screen from more onlookers but also makes it harder for you to sit off-centre. Many filters in our range limit the view to 30° either side, which gives strong privacy. Some allow 60°, which is more forgiving if you share the desk with a colleague.

Surface finish. Many filters also reduce glare, and some add an anti-reflective coating. A matt anti-glare surface helps in bright offices, though it can soften the image slightly. Frameless filters are the most common type here, while framed ones suit users who want a rigid panel.

Privacy screen filter FAQ

How does a privacy screen filter work?

A privacy filter uses fine louvres inside the film to block light travelling at an angle. The screen looks normal when you sit directly in front, but turns dark to anyone looking from either side. The viewing angle is set by the filter, commonly 30° or 60° each way.

How do I know which size to buy?

Check your screen's diagonal and aspect ratio, such as 16:9 or 16:10, and match both to the filter. Measuring the visible screen width and height is more reliable than relying on the inch size alone. Laptops with a 3:2 display need a filter made for that ratio.

Can a privacy filter be removed and reused?

Yes, if it uses a magnetic, slide mount or adhesive strip fitting. These are designed to be taken off and put back, which helps when you need to share your screen with others. Full adhesive filters are meant to stay in place, so they are not ideal for frequent removal.

Does a privacy filter make the screen dimmer?

Yes, most filters reduce brightness a little, because they block part of the light. You can usually compensate by raising the screen brightness slightly. Filters that also have an anti-glare finish can make reflections less distracting in bright rooms.
