Network cabling accessories

Network cabling accessories

Network cabling accessories are the parts that surround the cable itself: patch panels, keystone modules, wall outlets, patch cables and cable management for home offices, server cabinets and installers. Leading brands in our range include EFB Elektronik, DIGITUS, INLINE and ROLINE, with PATCHBOX and Delock also well represented.

How to choose network cabling accessories

Category rating. Every part in a link should match the cable's category, because the slowest component sets the limit. Cat.6 suits most gigabit installations, while Cat.6A is the usual choice when you want 10 Gigabit Ethernet over full-length runs. Higher categories such as Cat.7 and Cat.8 are mainly worth considering for short, dense links in data centres.

Shielding. Unshielded (UTP) parts are easier to terminate and fine for most homes and small offices. Shielded parts (F/UTP, S/FTP and similar) help near power cables, lifts or heavy machinery, but only if the shield is earthed properly at both ends. Mixing shielded cable with unshielded sockets removes most of the benefit, so keep the whole chain consistent.

Component type and termination. A keystone module, a wall outlet and a patch panel all do the same job of terminating a cable, but they suit different layouts. Choose keystones for flexible wall plates and mixed panels, and a 19-inch patch panel (usually 1U for 24 ports) for a rack. Many modules are tool-free, which is quicker for occasional work, while punch-down types are more common in larger installations and need the right tool.

Length and cable management. Patch cables should be long enough to avoid strain but short enough to keep a cabinet tidy. Measure the route between the panel and the switch, then allow a little slack. Cable organisers, brush panels and Velcro ties keep bend radius under control, which matters more for higher-category cable.

Connector and cable construction. Look at whether a patch cable is moulded with a snagless boot, and whether the conductors are solid or stranded. Stranded conductors are made for flexible patch leads, whereas solid conductors belong in permanent in-wall runs.

Brands we carry

  • EFB Elektronik: a German supplier of structured cabling and connectivity products, and the largest brand in this category in our range.
  • DIGITUS: the networking brand of ASSMANN Electronic, known for patch panels, keystone modules and cabling for rack installations.
  • INLINE: a German brand covering cables, adapters and connectivity accessories for computers and networks.
  • ROLINE and VALUE: two house brands of the Swiss distributor Secomp, offering network cables and installation accessories.
  • Delock: known for a large catalogue of cables, adapters and connectors, including many network and computer connectivity items.
  • METZ CONNECT: a specialist in structured cabling for professional installations, including patch panels and modules.
  • Ubiquiti: best known for UniFi and other networking systems, so its accessories suit setups built around that equipment.

Frequently asked questions

What are network cabling accessories?

Network cabling accessories are the components used to terminate, connect and organise Ethernet cabling. They include patch panels, keystone modules, wall outlets, patch cables and cable management products. They are used alongside the installed cable rather than replacing it.

Is Cat.6A worth choosing over Cat.6?

Cat.6A is worth it if you plan to run 10 Gigabit Ethernet over longer distances or want to future-proof a new installation. Cat.6 is enough for gigabit networks in most homes and small offices. Cat.6A parts are usually thicker and stiffer, so check the available space first.

Should I buy shielded or unshielded components?

Unshielded parts are enough for most homes and offices without strong interference. Choose shielded components when cables run close to power lines or industrial equipment, and make sure the cable, sockets and panel are all shielded and properly earthed. A partly shielded chain gives little benefit.

What is the difference between a keystone module and a patch panel?

A keystone module is a single snap-in socket that terminates one cable, while a patch panel is a rack-mounted frame that holds many ports, either fixed or fitted with keystones. Use keystones in wall plates and flexible panels. A patch panel suits a cabinet where many runs end in one place.
