Network device and DC power supplies

Network device and DC power supplies

This category holds replacement mains adapters and DC power supplies for network devices and similar equipment, suited to anyone who needs to replace a lost or faulty power brick. Synology is the main brand in our range, alongside ALLNET, TechniSat, Kärcher and CoreParts. The range is small and mixed, so matching the adapter to the exact device matters.

How to choose a network device or DC power supply

Output voltage. The adapter must deliver the voltage printed on the label of your router, NAS or other device. Our range includes an adapter with a 5 V output, which suits devices that run on 5 V and not those that need 12 V. A wrong voltage can stop the device from starting or damage it.

Current and wattage. The output current (in amps) or power (in watts) must equal or exceed what the device requires. A higher-rated adapter is safe because the device only draws what it needs. A lower-rated one can overheat, cause random restarts or fail early, especially on a NAS with several drives.

Connector and polarity. Barrel plugs come in different diameters, and the polarity of the centre pin must match the original. Compare the plug and the polarity symbol on your old adapter before ordering. For branded equipment, searching by the device's model number is the safest route.

Input voltage. Mains power in South Africa is 230 V. One adapter in our range lists an input of 110-230 V, which means it also works on 110 V supplies, useful if the device travels. Always check that the input rating on the label covers your local supply.

Brands in this category

  • Synology: a maker of NAS storage devices running the DiskStation Manager operating system, and the largest brand in this category, with five products in our range.
  • ALLNET: a German supplier of networking and IT hardware, which makes its adapters a fit for network installations.

Also in our range: TechniSat, Kärcher and CoreParts.

Frequently asked questions about network device and DC power supplies

Can I use a different adapter for my NAS or router?

Yes, but only if the output voltage and connector polarity match the original and the current rating is the same or higher. The plug must also physically fit. If you are unsure, use the adapter made for your specific model.

What does a 5 V output mean?

It means the adapter supplies a direct current of 5 volts to the device. Your device must be designed for 5 V, as plugging it into a 12 V supply or the reverse can damage it. The label on the device states the voltage it needs.

Is a higher amp rating a problem?

No, an adapter with a higher current rating than the device needs is safe. The device draws only the current it requires, so the extra capacity simply stays unused. A lower rating is the one to avoid, since the adapter can overheat or struggle under load.

Will a 110-230 V adapter work on South African mains?

Yes, South African mains power is 230 V, which falls inside a 110-230 V input range. Such an adapter also works on 110 V supplies in other countries, though you may need a plug adaptor there. Check the input rating on the label before use.
