Managed switches

Managed switches

Managed switches for offices, server rooms and larger business networks, from 5-port desktop units to 48-port rack models. The range includes Layer 2 and Layer 3 switches from HPE, Cisco, Zyxel, TP-Link and Juniper for anyone who needs VLANs, traffic control and remote administration.

How to choose a managed switch

Port count and speed. Count every device that will connect by cable, then add spare ports for growth. Our range includes switches with 5, 8, 16, 24 and 48 RJ-45 ports, and most listed models use Gigabit Ethernet. Some offer 2.5G ports, which suit newer access points and workstations.

Layer 2 or Layer 3. A Layer 2 switch handles VLANs, port mirroring, link aggregation and spanning tree on a single network. A Layer 3 switch also routes traffic between VLANs, which saves a separate router in larger networks. If you only need to separate guest, office and camera traffic, Layer 2 is often enough.

PoE and uplinks. Check whether the switch must power IP cameras, phones or wireless access points over Ethernet, and compare the total PoE budget rather than just the number of PoE ports. Also look at the uplink ports: SFP or SFP+ slots allow fibre links to another switch or a server room.

MAC address table and operating conditions. The MAC address table decides how many devices the switch can learn at once. Models in our range list tables from 2,000 to 32,000 entries, and 8,000 or 16,000 are common. Operating temperature ranges mostly run from 0 to 40 °C or 0 to 50 °C, so check this if the switch will sit in a warm cabinet or an unheated room.

Management method. Some switches are configured through a web interface, others through a command line or a cloud dashboard. Pick the style your IT staff already knows, since it affects setup time and day-to-day work.

Managed switch brands we carry

  • HPE: Hewlett Packard Enterprise owns the Aruba networking line, and its switches are widely used in business campus and branch networks.
  • Cisco: known for the Catalyst and Business series, configured through the Cisco IOS command line that many network engineers already know.
  • Zyxel: offers business switches for small and medium companies, including models that can be managed from the Nebula cloud platform.
  • TP-Link: sells the JetStream and Omada lines, which bring VLANs and monitoring to small offices and are managed through a web interface or a central controller.
  • Juniper: switches run Junos OS, which is popular in data centre and service provider networks.
  • Ubiquiti: UniFi switches are managed from the same controller as UniFi access points and gateways.
  • NETGEAR: best known for its smart managed and fully managed Pro switches aimed at small business networks.
  • MikroTik: Cloud Router Switch models run RouterOS or SwOS and give a lot of configuration control for network enthusiasts and small ISPs.

Also in our range: Alcatel, D-Link and Cambium Networks.

Managed switch FAQ

What is the difference between a managed and an unmanaged switch?

A managed switch can be configured, while an unmanaged switch simply passes traffic with no settings. With a managed model you can create VLANs, limit bandwidth, monitor ports and receive alerts. This matters once a network has more than a handful of users or needs separated segments.

Do I need a managed switch at home?

Most homes do not need one. An unmanaged switch is enough for a few wired devices. A managed switch makes sense if you run a home lab, several VLANs, IP cameras or a NAS that needs traffic prioritisation.

What is the difference between a Layer 2 and a Layer 3 managed switch?

A Layer 2 switch forwards traffic within one network using MAC addresses, while a Layer 3 switch can also route between networks. Layer 3 models suit networks with several VLANs that must talk to each other quickly. They usually have more advanced settings and need more configuration knowledge.

How many ports should a managed switch have?

Choose a switch with at least 20 to 25 percent more ports than you use today. A small office with ten wired devices fits an 16-port model, while a larger office or a patch panel usually calls for 24 or 48 ports. Remember to reserve ports for uplinks, printers and access points.
