Older Intel motherboards (LGA1200 and earlier)

Older Intel motherboards (LGA1200 and earlier)

This category holds Intel motherboards for LGA1200 and earlier sockets, aimed at people repairing, upgrading or rebuilding an existing PC without changing platform. The range is small and comes from BIOSTAR and ASRock. Check the socket and memory type first, because those two details decide what will work.

How to choose an older Intel motherboard

Socket and processor generation. The socket must match your processor exactly. LGA1200 takes 10th and 11th generation Intel Core chips, while LGA1151, LGA1150 and LGA1155 each belong to older generations. LGA1151 is the awkward one, as boards for 6th and 7th generation chips differ from those for 8th and 9th generation.

Chipset and BIOS. The chipset determines features such as overclocking support, the number of USB ports and storage connections. On some boards a processor from the newest supported generation needs a BIOS update first, so check the board's CPU support list before buying with an upgrade in mind.

Memory type. Boards for LGA1200 use DDR4, whereas the oldest sockets such as LGA1155 and LGA1150 mostly use DDR3. The two are not interchangeable, so reusing existing modules only works if the board matches them. Also check the number of memory slots and the maximum capacity.

Form factor. ATX, micro-ATX and mini-ITX boards differ in size and in how many expansion slots they offer. Choose one your case supports. A smaller board fits into a larger case, but not the other way round.

Expansion and connections. Count the PCIe slots, SATA ports and M.2 slots against what you plan to install. If you will use the processor's integrated graphics, check which video outputs the board has. Older boards often have fewer M.2 slots and fewer fast USB ports than current ones.

Brands we carry for older Intel motherboards

  • BIOSTAR: a Taiwanese manufacturer known for value-oriented motherboards and, in earlier generations, for boards with many PCIe slots built for cryptocurrency mining rigs. It accounts for most of the models in this category.
  • ASRock: began in 2002 as an offshoot of ASUS and now operates independently. It is known for packing a lot of features into mainstream boards and for its Extreme and Phantom Gaming lines.

Frequently asked questions

Which processors fit an LGA1200 motherboard?

LGA1200 boards take 10th and 11th generation Intel Core processors, such as the Core i5-10400 or Core i7-11700. Some 400-series boards need a BIOS update before they recognise 11th generation chips. Processors from the 12th generation onwards use the LGA1700 socket and will not fit.

Is it worth buying an older Intel motherboard?

Yes, if you already own a working processor and compatible memory and only need to replace a failed board. That is usually more sensible than replacing the processor and memory as well. If you are building a new PC from scratch, a current platform gives you a longer upgrade path.

How do I find out which socket my current motherboard uses?

Look for the model name printed on the board itself, or check the processor name and look up its socket in the manufacturer's specifications. Free tools such as CPU-Z also show the socket and chipset from within Windows. Compare that information with the product description before ordering.

Can I use DDR4 memory on an older board?

Only if the board is built for DDR4. DDR3 and DDR4 modules have different notches and are not compatible, so they cannot be swapped between boards. Check the memory type in the board's specification, along with the supported speeds and maximum capacity.
