Oral irrigators

Oral irrigators

Oral irrigators, also called water flossers, clean between teeth and along the gumline with a pulsing jet of water. They suit anyone with braces, implants, bridges or tight gaps where string floss is awkward to use. Our range covers countertop and cordless models from Philips, Waterpik and Oral-B, among others.

How to choose an oral irrigator

Countertop or cordless. Countertop units have a large water tank and a mains-powered pump, so they suit a family bathroom where the device can stay out. Cordless models are smaller and rechargeable, which makes them easier to store in a drawer or pack for travel, but their tanks are smaller.

Tank size and run time. A full cleaning of both jaws usually takes around a minute, so a tank that lasts that long without refilling is the practical minimum. Large tanks mean fewer interruptions. On cordless models, check how many sessions a single charge gives.

Pressure settings and modes. Adjustable pressure lets you start gently if your gums are sensitive and increase it as you get used to it. Models with extra modes, such as pulse or soft settings, give more control, though a few well-chosen levels matter more than a long list.

Nozzles for your needs. A standard jet tip covers everyday cleaning. Orthodontic tips help around braces, and dedicated tips are made for implants, crowns and periodontal pockets. If several people share one unit, look for a model with a nozzle storage slot or a set of spare tips.

Noise, size and finish. Pump-driven units can be noisy, so it is worth checking the noise level if you use it early in the morning. Models in our range come in white and black, which is useful if you want the device to match your bathroom.

Oral irrigator FAQ

Does an oral irrigator replace floss?

Not entirely. A water flosser flushes out food debris and bacteria from between teeth and under the gumline, but it does not scrape plaque off tooth surfaces the way floss can. Many dentists suggest using it as an addition to brushing, or as an alternative if floss is difficult to handle.

How often should I use an oral irrigator?

Once a day is the usual recommendation, typically in the evening after brushing. Using it more often is generally fine if your dentist agrees. Start on a low pressure setting and increase it gradually.

Can I use an oral irrigator with braces or implants?

Yes, oral irrigators are commonly used by people with braces, implants, bridges and crowns, because the water stream reaches areas that floss struggles with. Choose a model that includes or accepts orthodontic or implant tips. Ask your dentist or orthodontist about the best pressure setting for your treatment.

Is a cordless or countertop irrigator better?

It depends on how you will use it. A countertop model holds more water and gives a longer, uninterrupted session, so it works well at home. A cordless model takes less space and travels easily, but you will need to refill the smaller tank during use and keep it charged.
