How to choose an epilator or hair removal device
Technology. An epilator pulls hairs out at the root with small tweezers, while an IPL (intense pulsed light) device uses light pulses to reduce hair growth over a series of sessions. IPL is the main technology in our range, and a few models use home pulsed light (HPL), which works on the same principle.
Skin and hair colour. IPL generally works best on light to medium skin with dark hair, and it is not effective on white, grey or very light blonde hair. Check the manufacturer's skin tone chart before buying. Some devices have a skin tone sensor that blocks the flash when the setting is unsuitable.
Power source. Mains-powered models in our range run on AC, usually with a 100 to 240 V input, so they work in South Africa with the right plug. Battery and AC/battery models let you work without a cable. Corded IPL devices are often chosen for long sessions on the legs, since the flash output stays constant.
Body areas and attachments. Large treatment windows cover legs and back faster, while smaller heads suit underarms, bikini line and face. Check which attachments are included and whether the device is approved for facial use, as not all are.
Flash count and session time. IPL devices have a limited number of flashes in their lifespan, which is worth comparing across models. A higher count means more full-body treatments before the device reaches the end of its life.

Epilator and IPL hair removal FAQ
What is the difference between an epilator and an IPL device?
An epilator removes hair mechanically by pulling it out at the root, and regrowth typically takes a few weeks. An IPL device uses pulses of light to weaken the hair follicle, so hair grows back finer and more slowly after repeated sessions. Epilators give immediate results, while IPL takes several weeks to show an effect.
Is IPL hair removal permanent?
IPL is generally described as long-term hair reduction, not guaranteed permanent removal. Results vary with hair colour, skin tone and how closely you follow the treatment schedule. Many users need occasional top-up sessions to keep the skin smooth.
Does epilating hurt?
Epilating can be uncomfortable, especially the first few times and on sensitive areas such as underarms and bikini line. Discomfort usually eases as the hair gets finer with regular use. Models with lower speed settings or massage attachments can make it more bearable.
Can IPL be used on dark skin?
Standard IPL devices are generally not recommended for dark skin, because the light can be absorbed by the skin pigment as well as the hair and cause burns. Some devices include a skin tone sensor, but you should always check the manufacturer's guidance for your skin tone before use. If you are unsure, a patch test or advice from a doctor or dermatologist is sensible.
