Personal care devices

Personal care devices

Personal care devices cover electric shavers and trimmers, hair dryers, electric toothbrushes, straighteners, curling brushes and epilators for people who groom or style at home. The range includes more than 1,800 products from Philips, Braun, BaByliss, Remington, Panasonic and Oral-B, plus replacement brush heads and shaver accessories.

How to choose personal care devices

Start with the task. A shaver, a beard trimmer and a hair clipper are not interchangeable, and neither are a hair dryer and a styling brush. Decide whether you need to remove hair, cut it, dry it or shape it, then narrow the choice within that subcategory.

Check the power source. Many devices in our range are battery powered, which suits travel and cord-free use. Mains-only models are common among hair dryers, which need sustained heat and airflow, and some products run on either mains or battery. A few charge over USB, which is handy if you already carry a charger.

Match the design to your skin and hair. Foil shavers are often chosen for a close shave and rotary heads for longer or uneven growth, while sensitive skin usually does better with a gentler head and wet and dry use. For hair, look at adjustable heat and airflow settings, ceramic or ionic technology and included attachments such as a concentrator or diffuser.

Look at running costs. Toothbrush heads, shaver foils and blades wear out and need replacing. Check that the replacements for your handle are available before you buy, and remember that heads are usually specific to a brand and series.

Brands in our range

  • Philips: known for Sonicare sonic toothbrushes and OneBlade trimmers that shave, trim and edge with one blade unit.
  • Braun: a long-standing maker of foil electric shavers, including models that can be used in the shower.
  • Oral-B: known for electric toothbrushes with round, oscillating-rotating heads, with replacement heads available separately.
  • BaByliss: a hair styling specialist with a strong presence in dryers, straighteners and curling tools used by hairdressers.
  • Remington: known for home grooming tools, particularly hair straighteners, stylers and shavers.
  • Panasonic: makes electric shavers and trimmers, as well as hair dryers with built-in ionic care features.
  • Rowenta: best known for steam irons and garment steamers, and also makes hair styling brushes.
  • Gillette: famous for razors and shaving products, so a natural choice for men's grooming.
  • Dreame: better known for robot vacuums, and also makes hair care devices.

Also in our range: ETA, Revamp and Adler.

The largest subcategories are shavers and trimmers, hair dryers and electric toothbrushes. You will also find curling brushes, straighteners, epilators, oral irrigators, hair clippers, irons and steamers, along with toothbrush heads and shaver accessories.

Frequently asked questions

Is a foil or rotary shaver better?

Neither is better in every case. Foil shavers tend to give a closer finish on short stubble and are often preferred for sensitive skin, while rotary shavers follow facial contours well and cope better with longer or irregular growth. Try the one that suits your beard growth and skin.

Is a sonic or an oscillating electric toothbrush better?

Both clean effectively when used for the recommended two minutes. Sonic brushes clean with high-speed vibration, while oscillating-rotating brushes use a small round head that turns back and forth. The best choice is the one you find comfortable and will use consistently.

How often should I change an electric toothbrush head?

Replace the head about every three months, or sooner if the bristles look worn or splayed. Worn bristles clean less effectively. Make sure you buy a head that fits your handle, as heads are usually made for specific brands and series.

What should I look for in a hair dryer?

Look for adjustable heat and airflow settings, a cool shot button and useful attachments such as a concentrator nozzle or diffuser. Higher wattage generally means faster drying, but gentler heat settings matter if your hair is fine or damaged. Ionic or ceramic features can help reduce frizz.
