How to choose printer accessories

Print technology and resolution. Printheads are made for a specific resolution, commonly 203 dpi or 300 dpi, and for a specific printer width. If your printer uses thermal transfer, ribbons and the printhead must suit the labels you print. Direct thermal printers need no ribbon, but they do need heat-sensitive media.
Genuine or compatible parts. Parts made by the printer manufacturer are built to the tolerances and firmware of that printer. That matters most for printheads and cutters, where poor fit can cause faint print, streaks or jams.
Who will fit it. Platen rollers, batteries and many dispensers can usually be swapped by the user in a few minutes. A printhead or cutter module may call for more care, so check the printer manual first and decide whether a technician should do the job.
