Rack parts and panels

Rack parts and panels

Rack parts and panels covers the hardware that fits out 19-inch server and network racks, along with a freestanding 24U rack in our range. It suits IT managers, installers and small businesses building or tidying a server room or comms cabinet. Brands include ALLNET, APC, DIGITUS and ROLINE.

How to choose rack parts and panels

Rack standard and compatibility. Most server and network equipment is built for the 19-inch standard, so check that a panel or accessory is made for 19-inch mounting before you order. Also check the mounting method, as some parts use cage nuts and others bolt straight into threaded rails.

Height in rack units. Every part takes up a set number of rack units (U), and the rack must have enough free U for everything inside it. Our range includes a 24U freestanding rack, which gives room for a typical set of switches, patch panels, servers and a UPS. Add up the U of all planned equipment and leave spare space for growth.

Purpose of the part. Patch panels organise cabling, blanking panels close unused gaps, and shelves hold devices that have no rack ears. Decide what problem you are solving first, whether that is tidy cabling, better airflow or somewhere to put a loose device, then pick the part type to match.

Freestanding or other mounting. A freestanding rack stands on the floor and suits a server room or office corner where you need full-height capacity. Check the floor space, door clearance and the depth of your deepest server before choosing, because depth is often what rules a rack out.

Load and environment. Heavy servers and UPS units need a rack and shelves rated for their weight. Consider airflow and cable routing as well, since a densely filled rack with open gaps runs hotter than one with properly closed panels.

Rack parts and panels: frequently asked questions

What does 19-inch rack mean?

A 19-inch rack is the standard frame width for mounting server, network and power equipment. The 19 inches refers to the width of the front mounting rails, not the whole cabinet. Panels and accessories made to this standard fit racks from different manufacturers.

How many rack units do I need?

Add up the rack units (U) of every device you plan to mount, then allow extra space for future equipment. A 24U rack, such as the freestanding one in our range, suits a modest set of switches, patch panels and servers. Larger server rooms usually need taller racks or several of them.

What is a blanking panel used for?

A blanking panel covers an empty rack unit so the front of the rack is closed. This stops warm exhaust air from circulating back to the front of your equipment and helps keep temperatures stable. It also gives the rack a tidier look.

Can I mix rack parts from different brands?

Yes, as long as every part follows the 19-inch standard and uses a compatible mounting method. Check the height in rack units and the fixing type, such as cage nuts or threaded rails, before buying. Mixing brands is common in racks that grow over time.
