Drive adapters and converters

Drive adapters and converters

Drive adapters and converters let you connect a storage drive to a bay, port or interface it was not built for, for example fitting a 2.5-inch drive into a 3.5-inch bay or linking a drive through a different connector. Our small range comes from RaidSonic and Lenovo and suits anyone upgrading, cloning or repurposing drives in a desktop, laptop or server.

How to choose a drive adapter or converter

Drive size and type. Check the physical format of the drive first: 2.5-inch, 3.5-inch, M.2 or another form factor. An adapter built for a 2.5-inch SSD will not necessarily accept an M.2 drive, so match the product description to the drive you actually own.

Interface on both sides. Note the connector on the drive (SATA, NVMe or SAS, for example) and the connector or bay on the computer. An adapter only converts between the interfaces it lists, and a mismatch can leave the drive unrecognised.

Speed. A converter can hold back a fast drive if its own interface is slower. An NVMe SSD placed behind an older SATA-based adapter will run at SATA speeds, so look at the supported interface generation or transfer rate in the specification before you buy.

Compatibility with the host device. Adapters made for servers and laptops often depend on specific trays, brackets or backplanes. If you are adding a drive to a Lenovo system, confirm that the adapter is listed for your model. For a standard desktop bay, check the screw hole positions and the drive height the adapter allows.

Power and cooling. Find out whether the adapter takes power from the host or needs a separate cable, and whether it leaves airflow around the drive. Heat matters most with fast SSDs under sustained load, such as large file transfers or drive cloning.

Drive adapter brands in our range

  • RaidSonic: the company behind the ICY BOX label, known for external drive enclosures, docking stations and mounting frames that convert between drive sizes and interfaces.
  • Lenovo: known for ThinkPad laptops and ThinkSystem servers, and its drive accessories are generally designed to fit its own machines, so model compatibility is the first thing to check.

Each brand is represented by one product, so the selection is focused rather than large. It is best suited to buyers who already know which drive and which device they are working with.

Drive adapters and converters: frequently asked questions

What is a drive adapter used for?

A drive adapter lets a drive work in a slot, bay or port that does not match its size or connector. Typical jobs include mounting a 2.5-inch SSD in a 3.5-inch bay, connecting an old drive to a newer computer, or fitting a drive into a server tray. It does not add storage by itself, it only makes the physical or electrical connection possible.

Will an adapter make my drive slower?

It can, but only if the adapter or the port it uses is slower than the drive. A simple mounting bracket does not change speed at all. A converter that changes interface, such as NVMe to SATA, is limited to the slower of the two standards, so check the supported speed in the specification.

Can I fit a 2.5-inch SSD in a 3.5-inch bay?

Yes, with a mounting adapter or frame designed for that purpose. The frame holds the smaller drive at the correct position so the bay's screw holes and connectors line up. Check that the frame supports the thickness of your drive and that the data connector is still reachable.

How do I check that an adapter is compatible with my computer?

Compare three things: the drive format and interface you want to use, the bay or port available in the computer, and the model list or specification of the adapter. For branded laptops and servers, such as Lenovo systems, look for your exact model or machine type in the product details. If the information is unclear, check the computer's manual before ordering.
