Mobile broadband modules

Mobile broadband modules are internal cellular cards that add 4G LTE or 5G connectivity to laptops, mini PCs, industrial computers and routers through an M.2 or mini PCIe slot. They suit anyone who wants a SIM-based connection built into the device instead of a USB dongle or a phone hotspot. SIM cards and data plans are separate purchases.

How to choose a mobile broadband module

Slot and form factor. Check which slot your device has before anything else. Many recent laptops and mini PCs use an M.2 slot, while older equipment often uses mini PCIe, and the two are not interchangeable. Also confirm the card length (for example 3042 or 3052 in M.2) and whether the slot supports the PCIe or USB signalling the module uses.

4G or 5G. A 4G LTE module is usually enough for browsing, video calls, remote work and backup connections. A 5G module costs more and only pays off where your operator has solid 5G coverage and you need higher speeds or lower latency. Within LTE, the category number (Cat 4, Cat 6, Cat 12 and so on) indicates the maximum theoretical speed.

Frequency bands and operator support. A module only works well on the bands it supports, so compare its band list with the ones your network operator uses in your area. A module built for another region may connect but give weak coverage or slow speeds indoors. Low-frequency bands generally travel further and penetrate buildings better.

Device and software compatibility. Some laptop BIOS versions only accept modules approved by the manufacturer, so look up your model's compatibility list. Confirm that drivers exist for your operating system, such as Windows 11 or Linux. Most modules also need a SIM slot on the device and one or more antenna connections.

Antennas and cabling. A module without proper antennas will perform poorly, whatever its specification says. Check that your device has cellular antenna leads routed to the slot, or plan to add them. Modules that support carrier aggregation or MIMO need at least two antennas to reach their rated speeds.

Module types you will find

  • M.2 modules: the standard format for current laptops, mini PCs and compact industrial boards, available in 4G and 5G versions.
  • Mini PCIe modules: found mainly in older laptops, embedded computers and routers, and mostly limited to 4G LTE.
  • 5G sub-6 GHz modules: cover the 5G bands that most operators use for general coverage, and usually fall back to LTE where 5G is not available.
  • 4G LTE modules: suit most fixed and mobile uses, including backup internet and remote monitoring, and usually cost less than 5G.

Each product listing shows the manufacturer, model and supported bands, so compare these against your device and network before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a mobile broadband module to any laptop?

No, only to laptops with a free, suitable slot and the right antenna connections. Check the slot type (M.2 or mini PCIe), its length, and whether your laptop's manufacturer restricts which modules it accepts. If the slot or antennas are missing, an external USB modem or router is simpler.

Do I need a SIM card for a mobile broadband module?

Yes, a module connects through a SIM card from a mobile operator. Your device needs a SIM slot, or you need a module that supports eSIM. The SIM and data plan are bought from the operator, not with the module.

What is the difference between a 4G and a 5G module?

A 5G module can reach higher speeds and lower latency than 4G, but only where your operator provides 5G coverage. Most 5G modules fall back to LTE elsewhere. For everyday browsing, email and video calls, a 4G LTE module is usually sufficient and costs less.

Will a mobile broadband module work with any network operator?

Most modules are not tied to one operator, but they only work well on the frequency bands they support. Compare the module's band list with the bands your operator uses locally. Some devices also require the SIM to be unlocked or provisioned for data use.
