Wi-Fi adapters

Wi-Fi adapters add or upgrade wireless networking on desktop PCs, laptops and other computers, and suit anyone whose device has no Wi-Fi, a weak signal or an outdated wireless standard. The category covers USB adapters, PCIe cards and M.2 modules.

The right choice depends mostly on how the adapter connects to your computer and which router it will talk to.

How to choose a Wi-Fi adapter

Connection type. USB adapters need no tools and move easily between computers, which suits laptops and quick upgrades. PCIe cards fit inside a desktop and usually carry larger, external antennas. M.2 modules are mainly for replacing a laptop's or mini PC's existing wireless card, so check the slot type first.

Wi-Fi standard. Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) is still fine for everyday browsing and streaming. Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E handle busy homes with many devices better, and Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6 GHz band. Wi-Fi 7 is the newest, but you only benefit if your router supports it too.

Bands and speed. Dual-band adapters work on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band reaches further through walls, while 5 GHz is faster at shorter distances. Speeds printed on the box are theoretical maximums combined across bands, so your real speed will be lower and is also limited by your internet line.

Antennas and range. External, adjustable antennas generally pick up a signal better than tiny USB sticks. If your computer sits behind a desk or far from the router, an adapter with an extension cradle or cable lets you place the antenna in a better position.

Compatibility and Bluetooth. Check that drivers exist for your operating system, such as Windows 11 or Linux. Some PCIe and M.2 adapters also include Bluetooth, which is useful if your computer lacks it, but it may need an extra USB header connection inside a desktop.

Adapter types you will find here

  • USB Wi-Fi adapters: plug into a free USB port, so they work with both desktops and laptops and need no case opening.
  • PCIe Wi-Fi cards: install in a desktop motherboard slot and normally use external antennas for steadier reception.
  • M.2 Wi-Fi modules: replace the internal wireless card in compatible laptops, mini PCs and motherboards.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combo adapters: add both wireless networking and Bluetooth in a single device, which saves a port or slot.

Manufacturer filters on this page will list the brands as models are added, so check them when comparing options.

Wi-Fi adapter FAQ

Does a desktop PC need a Wi-Fi adapter?

Only if it has no built-in wireless and you cannot connect it to the router with an Ethernet cable. Many desktop motherboards, especially budget ones, have no Wi-Fi. A USB adapter or PCIe card adds it in a few minutes.

Is a USB Wi-Fi adapter as good as a PCIe card?

Not always, but often it is good enough. PCIe cards usually offer better antennas and more stable reception, while modern USB 3.0 adapters can reach similar speeds in a strong signal area. USB is simpler to install and easier to move between machines.

Will a Wi-Fi 6 adapter work with an older router?

Yes, it will connect to an older router, but at the speed of the older standard. A Wi-Fi 6 adapter on a Wi-Fi 5 router behaves like a Wi-Fi 5 device. You only get the full benefit once the router supports Wi-Fi 6 as well.

How do I install a Wi-Fi adapter?

For a USB adapter, plug it into a free port and install the driver if Windows does not do so automatically. For a PCIe card, switch off the PC, fit the card into a free slot, attach the antennas and then install the driver. M.2 modules go into the matching internal slot, so check the manual for your device first.
