Adapters and converters

Adapters and converters

Adapters and converters for connecting devices that use different ports: video adapters such as HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI and VGA, USB and USB-C adapters, network and serial converters. The range suits home users, offices and IT installers, with over 1700 models from DeLock, InLine, EXSYS, StarTech and other brands.

How to choose an adapter or converter

Connectors on both ends. Check the exact plug type and gender on the device and on the cable or screen, for example HDMI male to VGA female. Mini and micro versions of HDMI and DisplayPort look similar to the full-size ones, so read the connector name rather than judging by shape.

Passive or active. A passive adapter only rewires the pins and works when both ports speak the same signal, such as USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode to HDMI. Converting between different signal types, for example HDMI to VGA or HDMI to DisplayPort, needs an active converter with a chip inside, and some of these require extra power from USB.

Signal direction. Most video converters work in one direction only. An HDMI to VGA converter will not send a signal from VGA to HDMI, so confirm which device is the source and which is the display before ordering.

Resolution and standard version. Match the adapter to what your screen can show. A 4K display at 60 Hz needs an adapter that supports HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.2 or newer, while an older VGA or DVI-D adapter may be limited to Full HD. The same applies to USB: a USB 3.x adapter is needed to keep transfer speeds high.

Form and fit. A short adapter cable is easier on laptop ports than a rigid plug that hangs off the side. Plug-type adapters suit fixed setups, and slim cables suit travel bags.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect an HDMI port to a VGA monitor?

Yes, but you need an active HDMI to VGA converter, because HDMI is digital and VGA is analogue. A simple passive cable will not work. Many converters also have a separate audio output, as VGA carries no sound.

What is the difference between an adapter and a converter?

An adapter changes the plug shape while the signal stays the same, for example USB-C to USB-A. A converter changes the signal itself, for example HDMI to VGA, and therefore contains electronics. Shops often use the two words loosely, so check the product description.

Will a USB-C to HDMI adapter work with any laptop?

No, the USB-C port on the laptop must support video output, usually through DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt. Some USB-C ports are for data and charging only. Check the laptop specifications for a display or Thunderbolt symbol next to the port.

Does an adapter reduce picture quality?

A good adapter does not visibly reduce quality as long as it supports the resolution and refresh rate you use. Problems appear when the adapter is limited to a lower standard, such as 1080p, while the screen is 4K. Converting from digital to analogue signals, such as HDMI to VGA, can also give a slightly softer image.
