Internal USB cables and adapters connect the USB headers on a motherboard to front-panel ports, card readers, fan hubs, RGB controllers and other devices inside a PC case. They suit anyone building, repairing or upgrading a desktop, and our range includes products from AKASA, INLINE, SILVERSTONE and KOLINK.
Typical products are header extension cables, splitters and adapters between different internal USB connectors.
How to choose an internal USB cable or adapter
Header type. Most motherboards have a USB 2.0 header with 9 pins and a USB 3.0 header with 19 or 20 pins. Newer boards also add a USB-C front-panel header. The connector on the cable must match the header, so check the motherboard manual before ordering.
Adapter direction. Adapters convert one internal connector type into another, for example to connect an older case with USB 2.0 plugs to a different header. The connection then runs at the speed of the slower standard, so an adapter will not make an old port faster.
Cable length. Measure the route from the header to the device, going around the edges of the case rather than in a straight line. A mid-tower usually needs less length than a full tower, and an extension cable is useful when a header sits far from the front panel.
Build quality. Shielding and well-fitted connectors matter most for USB 3.0 and faster links, because poor cables can cause dropouts. Thin, flexible cables are also easier to route behind the motherboard tray in a tight case.
Ports and power. A splitter turns one header into several ports, but those ports share the bandwidth and power of that single header. It works for a keyboard, a fan controller or an RGB hub, but not for several external drives at once.
Brands we carry
- AKASA: a brand known for PC cooling and small accessories, and the largest name in this category in our range.
- INLINE: a German brand that makes a large number of cables and adapters for computer connections.
- SILVERSTONE: best known for PC cases and power supplies, so its cables are designed to match its own enclosures.
- KOLINK: known for PC cases, power supplies and cooling for desktop builds.
Also in our range: AKYGA and HP.
Frequently asked questions about internal USB cables
What is an internal USB cable used for?
An internal USB cable links a USB header on the motherboard to a device inside or on the case. Common uses include front-panel USB ports, internal card readers and hubs, and fan or lighting controllers that need a USB connection. It is not meant for use outside the case.
Is a USB 3.0 header the same as a USB 2.0 header?
No, the two headers differ in size and pin layout. A USB 2.0 header has 9 pins, while a USB 3.0 header has 19 or 20 pins and carries extra lines for higher speeds. Forcing one plug onto the other can damage the board, so use an adapter made for the conversion.
How do I find out which USB header my motherboard has?
Look in the motherboard manual, where headers are listed as USB 2.0, USB 3.0 or USB-C. The labels are usually also printed on the board near the edge or the bottom corner. A header with two rows of pins and a gap is usually USB 2.0, while a wide block with a notch is usually USB 3.0.
Can I add more USB ports with an internal splitter?
Yes, an internal splitter or hub can turn one header into several ports. The bandwidth and power of the original header are shared between them, so it suits low-demand devices such as keyboards, mice and controllers. For several fast external drives, separate headers or a PCIe expansion card are the better option.
