Video adapters and converters

Video adapters and converters link a computer, games console or camera to a monitor, TV or projector when the ports do not match. The category covers adapters such as HDMI to VGA, DisplayPort to HDMI and USB-C to HDMI, plus active converters that change the signal itself. It suits anyone connecting a newer laptop to older display equipment.

How to choose a video adapter or converter

Connectors and direction. Check the output port on the source and the input port on the screen, then pick the adapter that matches in that order. Many adapters work in one direction only, so a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter will not carry a signal from HDMI to DisplayPort.

Adapter or active converter. Passive adapters simply rewire a connection between similar digital standards, for example DisplayPort to HDMI on ports that support dual mode. Going from digital to analogue, such as HDMI to VGA, always needs a chip inside the adapter to convert the signal, and some of these need external power.

Resolution and refresh rate. Look for the maximum resolution the adapter supports and compare it with your screen. Full HD at 60 Hz is enough for office work and video calls, while 4K at 60 Hz needs an adapter that explicitly states it, along with a suitable cable and ports at both ends.

USB-C compatibility. A USB-C port only carries video if the device supports DisplayPort Alternative Mode or Thunderbolt. Check the specification of your laptop or tablet before buying a USB-C to HDMI or USB-C to DisplayPort adapter.

Audio and extras. HDMI and DisplayPort adapters generally pass audio along with video, but VGA does not. If you are going to VGA, choose a model with a separate 3.5 mm audio output so that sound can still reach speakers or a TV.

Adapter types you will find here

  • HDMI adapters: the most common type, used to connect laptops and PCs to TVs, projectors and capture devices.
  • VGA adapters and converters: for older monitors and projectors that still use the 15-pin analogue connector, usually with an active chip for digital sources.
  • DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort adapters: common on graphics cards, docking stations and many business laptops, and often used to drive HDMI or DVI displays.
  • USB-C and USB video adapters: let a laptop with a USB-C port, or in some cases a standard USB port, add an extra display output.
  • DVI adapters: bridge older DVI monitors to modern HDMI or DisplayPort sources.

Manufacturer and chipset details differ from item to item, so check the product listing for the brand and the stated maximum resolution before ordering.

Frequently asked questions about video adapters and converters

What is the difference between a video adapter and a video converter?

An adapter changes the shape of the connector, while a converter changes the type of signal. DisplayPort to HDMI is often a simple adapter between two digital standards. HDMI to VGA is a converter, because the digital signal has to become analogue.

Can I connect HDMI to VGA with a plain cable?

No, a plain cable will not work, because HDMI is digital and VGA is analogue. You need an HDMI to VGA adapter with a built-in conversion chip. It is also worth choosing one with a separate audio output, as VGA carries no sound.

Will a USB-C to HDMI adapter work with my laptop?

It will work only if the USB-C port supports video output. Look for DisplayPort Alternative Mode or Thunderbolt in the laptop specification. Some USB-C ports are limited to data and charging and will show no picture.

Why is my screen blank or flickering when I use an adapter?

The most common causes are a wrong direction, an unsupported resolution or a loose connection. Confirm that the adapter is built for your source and screen, lower the resolution in the display settings and try a different cable. Active converters may also need external power through a USB connector.
