Drive trays and caddies

Drive trays and caddies are the brackets and sleds that hold a hard drive or SSD in a PC case, NAS or server bay. They suit anyone upgrading storage, replacing a lost tray or fitting a 2.5 inch SSD into a 3.5 inch bay. Typical types are adapter brackets, hot-swap caddies and tool-free bay trays. No products are listed in this category at the moment, so the advice below explains what to check before buying.

How to choose a drive tray or caddy

Drive size. Check whether your drive is 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch, and whether the bay expects the same size. A 2.5 inch SSD in a 3.5 inch bay needs an adapter bracket, while a 3.5 inch drive will not fit a bay built for 2.5 inch drives.

Bay or server compatibility. Hot-swap caddies are often designed for a particular server or enclosure family, and the latch, rail shape and connector position can differ between them. Look up the exact model of your server, NAS or case and compare it with the tray description before ordering.

Interface and backplane. A caddy is mostly mechanical, but it must line up with the connector on the backplane. SATA drives generally work in SAS bays, while SAS drives do not work on a SATA-only backplane. NVMe drives need a tray made for that type of bay.

Drive thickness. 2.5 inch drives come in different heights, commonly 7 mm for most SSDs and 9.5 mm or 15 mm for some hard drives. A tray with fixed spacing may hold a thin SSD loosely or refuse a thicker drive.

Build and fixing method. Metal trays are stiffer and help carry heat away from the drive, while plastic ones are lighter and cheaper. Tool-free designs save time when you swap drives often, but screw-down trays hold a drive more firmly in a machine that gets moved around.

Brands and types to look for

  • Original manufacturer trays: made to fit one server, NAS or workstation family, so the latch, rails and drive indicator light line up with the bay.
  • Universal adapter brackets: usually convert a 2.5 inch drive to a 3.5 inch mounting position and use standard screw holes, which suits ordinary desktop cases.
  • Hot-swap caddies: let you remove a drive without opening the machine, and many include a lock or a status light.

Brand names will appear here once products are listed. Until then, match the tray to the make and model of your case, NAS or server rather than to the brand of the drive.

Drive trays and caddies: frequently asked questions

What is a drive caddy used for?

A drive caddy holds a hard drive or SSD so it can slide into a bay and connect to the backplane. In hot-swap systems it lets you remove or replace a drive without taking the machine apart. It also protects the drive and keeps it aligned with the connector.

Can I fit a 2.5 inch SSD in a 3.5 inch bay?

Yes, with a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch adapter bracket. The bracket places the SSD at the right position so the screw holes and connectors line up. Some server caddies also accept both sizes, but check the description first.

Are drive caddies interchangeable between servers?

Not usually. Caddies are often built for a specific server or enclosure family, and even similar-looking ones can differ in latch shape, rail position and light pipe. Always confirm the exact model of your system before buying a replacement.

Do I need a caddy for a hot-swap bay?

In most hot-swap bays, yes. The drive is screwed into the caddy, and the caddy then slides into the bay and locks in place. Without it, the drive cannot be seated securely or removed safely while the system is running.
