How to choose an external drive enclosure
Drive type and size. Match the enclosure to the drive you already own or plan to buy. A 2.5-inch enclosure fits laptop hard drives and SATA SSDs, a 3.5-inch one fits desktop hard drives, and M.2 enclosures fit small SSD sticks. M.2 drives come as SATA or NVMe, and many enclosures support only one of them, so check this before buying.
Connection and speed. USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) is enough for a hard drive, which rarely exceeds about 200 MB/s. For an NVMe SSD, look for USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) or faster, otherwise the enclosure becomes the bottleneck. Check that your computer has a matching port and that the supplied cable is the right type, USB-C or USB-A.
Cooling and materials. Aluminium bodies draw heat away from an SSD better than plastic, which matters during long file transfers. NVMe drives get hot, so look for a thermal pad or heatsink inside. Hard drives in 3.5-inch cases benefit from ventilation or a quiet fan.
Power and number of bays. A 2.5-inch drive normally runs from the USB port alone. A 3.5-inch drive needs its own power adapter because it draws more current than a port provides. If you want to combine several disks, a multi-bay enclosure keeps them in one box, but check whether it offers RAID or simply shows each disk separately.

Can I use an old laptop hard drive in an external enclosure?
Yes, a 2.5-inch SATA enclosure is designed for exactly that. You slide the drive in, close the case and connect it by USB, and it appears as an ordinary external drive. Check that the drive's thickness (7 mm or 9.5 mm) is supported by the enclosure.
Will an external enclosure slow down my SSD?
It can, if the connection is slower than the drive. A SATA SSD reaches about 550 MB/s, which needs at least USB 3.2 Gen 1 or Gen 2. An NVMe SSD needs a 10 Gbps or faster enclosure to get close to its rated speed.
What is the difference between an enclosure and a docking station?
An enclosure holds the drive inside a closed case, while a docking station has an open slot where you insert bare drives and swap them freely. Enclosures protect the drive better for travel. Docking stations are more convenient if you change drives often.
Do I need to format a drive before using it in an enclosure?
Only if it has no usable file system or uses one your computer cannot read. A drive from a Windows PC will work on Windows without formatting, but a Mac may need to reformat it to read and write. Formatting erases everything on the drive, so copy your files first.
