Small fans (up to 92 mm)

Small fans (up to 92 mm)

Small case fans up to 92 mm for PC cases, compact builds, NAS boxes and heatsink cooling, with over 40 models in the range. Noctua makes up the largest share, alongside Xilence, NoiseBlocker and Chieftec. Fans are sold as single units, so you can replace one noisy fan or add airflow where a case runs warm.

How to choose a small case fan

Frame size. Fan sizes are named by the frame width, such as 40, 60, 80 and 92 mm, and the screw holes sit at a different spacing for each. Measure the space or check the old fan before ordering, because an 80 mm fan will not bolt onto a 92 mm mounting point.

Airflow or static pressure. A fan with high airflow moves the most air through an open space, such as a case front or rear panel. A fan built for static pressure pushes better through obstacles like dust filters, dense grilles, heatsink fins and radiators, so choose that type when the air has to pass through something.

Noise and speed. Rotation speed in RPM is the main driver of noise: a fan running slower is usually quieter but moves less air. Small fans spin faster than large ones to deliver the same airflow, so for a home PC or a media server, look for models designed for low noise and let a lower speed do the work.

Connector and control. A 3-pin fan has its speed adjusted by voltage, while a 4-pin PWM fan is controlled by the motherboard with a separate signal and can usually slow down further at idle. Check which headers your motherboard or fan controller has, since a 4-pin fan also works on a 3-pin header, only with less precise control.

Bearing type. The bearing affects lifespan and how the noise changes over time. Sleeve bearings are common in budget fans, while fluid dynamic and magnetically stabilised designs are generally aimed at longer, quieter running, which matters for fans that run around the clock.

Small fan brands we carry

  • Noctua: an Austrian brand known for low-noise fans and a recognisable brown and beige design, and the biggest name in this category.
  • Xilence: a German PC components brand that focuses on affordable cooling and power supplies.
  • NoiseBlocker: a German manufacturer whose whole business is quiet fans, which is where its name comes from.
  • Chieftec: a Taiwanese maker mostly known for PC cases and power supplies, also offering case fans to match.
  • Arctic: a cooling specialist known for fans and CPU coolers with a focus on good value.
  • Akasa: a supplier of cooling accessories, including fans for small and fanless-style PC projects.

Also in our range: Zalman, SilverStone and Deepcool.

Small case fans: frequently asked questions

How do I measure which fan size I need?

Measure the frame from one edge to the opposite edge, not the diameter of the blades. A fan marketed as 92 mm has a frame about 92 mm wide, and the mounting holes sit at a fixed spacing for that size. If you are replacing a fan, the size is often printed on its label or sticker.

What is the difference between a 3-pin and a 4-pin PWM fan?

A 3-pin fan is controlled by changing its supply voltage, while a 4-pin fan receives a PWM signal on a fourth wire. PWM usually gives smoother and wider speed control, and the motherboard can lower the speed more at idle. Both types fit the same kind of header in most cases.

Is a 92 mm fan quieter than an 80 mm fan?

Often yes, because a larger fan can move the same air at a lower speed. The actual noise still depends on the model, its bearing and its blade design. A well-designed 80 mm fan can be quieter than a basic 92 mm one.

Can I use fans from different brands in one PC?

Yes, as long as the size and connector suit your motherboard or controller. Fans from different brands work side by side without any problem. Matching the speed range and noise character can still make the PC sound more even.
