Thermal pads and sheets are soft, pre-cut gap fillers that sit between a chip and a heatsink. They suit anyone repairing or upgrading a graphics card, laptop, M.2 SSD or motherboard. How to choose thermal pads and sheets
Thickness. Measure the gap between the chip and the heatsink before buying. Graphics card memory and VRM pads are commonly between 0.5 mm and 3 mm thick, and the original pad is the best guide. A pad that is too thin leaves an air gap, while one that is too thick lifts the cooler off the main chip.
Thermal conductivity. This is rated in W/mK, and a higher number means heat passes through the pad more easily. Budget pads are often around 3 to 6 W/mK, while high-end pads go well beyond 10 W/mK. For a memory chip or an SSD, a mid-range pad is usually enough. A hot graphics card or a power-hungry laptop benefits from a higher rating.
Material and electrical safety. Silicone pads are the usual choice because they are soft, reusable a few times and do not conduct electricity. Graphite and metal-based sheets can carry heat very well but may conduct electricity, so they need care near exposed contacts. Check the product description if the pad will touch components around the chip.
Softness and size. A softer pad compresses more easily and presses evenly on uneven surfaces, which suits fragile chips and thin laptop coolers. Check the sheet size as well. Large sheets can be cut to fit several components, while small pre-cut pads are quicker to fit on a single part such as an M.2 drive.
Brands and what to look for
No brand list is available for this category at the moment. When products appear, these points help you compare any manufacturer:
- Stated conductivity: a reputable maker gives a W/mK figure and the test method, not just a vague claim of high performance.
- Thickness options: a brand selling several thicknesses in the same material makes it easier to match the original gap.
- Sheet or pre-cut format: sheets give flexibility for repairs, while pre-cut sets are quicker for common parts.
- Operating temperature: the stated range should comfortably cover what a graphics card or CPU reaches under load.

Thermal pads and sheets: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a thermal pad and thermal paste?
A thermal pad is a solid, soft sheet, while thermal paste is a thin paste spread between surfaces. Paste suits direct contact between a CPU and its cooler, where the gap is tiny. Pads fill larger gaps, such as those over graphics card memory or VRM chips.
What thickness of thermal pad do I need?
The right thickness matches the gap between the component and the heatsink. The safest approach is to measure the original pad with callipers or look up the card or laptop model, as manufacturers often use different thicknesses on different chips. If you are unsure, a slightly softer pad forgives small errors better than a hard one.
Can I reuse a thermal pad?
Sometimes, but it is not recommended. Once a pad has been compressed and heated, it often tears, stretches or loses contact when removed. Fresh pads are inexpensive compared with the risk of a hot graphics card or SSD.
Can thermal pads replace thermal paste on a CPU?
In most cases, no. A CPU and cooler have flat surfaces with very small gaps, which paste fills more effectively than a thick pad. Pads are better kept for components that sit at different heights under one heatsink.
