DDR3 and older memory

DDR3 and older memory

DDR3 and older memory covers DDR3, DDR3L and DDR2 modules for upgrading or repairing older desktops, servers and laptops. Most of our range is 240-pin DIMM for PCs and servers, with a few SO-DIMM modules for laptops. Brands include 2-Power, Coreparts, G.SKILL and Patriot Memory.

How to choose DDR3 and older memory

Memory generation. DDR2, DDR3 and DDR3L are not interchangeable, because the slots are keyed differently and the electrical specification differs. Check your motherboard or laptop manual first. In our range DDR3 is the most common, followed by DDR2, with some DDR3L, which runs at a lower voltage and suits systems designed for it.

Form factor. Desktops and servers use full-size 240-pin DIMM modules, while laptops and some compact PCs use SO-DIMM. Most of our modules are 240-pin DIMM, and only a handful are SO-DIMM, so laptop owners should confirm the form factor before ordering.

Speed and latency. Modules are listed by clock speed, from 667 MHz and 800 MHz up to 1333 MHz, 1600 MHz and a few at 1866 MHz. Your platform sets the ceiling, and faster modules usually run at the board's top supported speed. CAS latency is listed too, with values such as 6, 9 and 11 in our range. Lower numbers are better only when the clock speed is the same.

Capacity and layout. Single modules of 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB are the most common, and a few two-module kits are available. Check the maximum memory and the number of slots in your system. Matching the modules in size and speed helps avoid compatibility problems when you fill several slots.

ECC or non-ECC. ECC memory detects and corrects single-bit errors and is mainly used in servers and workstations. Most of our modules are non-ECC, which is what ordinary desktops and laptops need. Fit ECC only if the platform supports it, and never mix it with non-ECC modules unless the manual allows it.

Brands in our DDR3 and older memory range

  • 2-Power and Coreparts: the two largest brands here by model count, offering modules made to be compatible with specific branded desktops, laptops and servers.
  • G.SKILL: known for performance and overclocking memory aimed at enthusiast PC builders.
  • Patriot Memory: a maker of gaming and performance modules as well as standard desktop memory.
  • Kingston: one of the best-known independent memory makers, with standard modules for everyday desktop and server upgrades.
  • HP Enterprise, HP Inc., Dell, Lenovo and IBM: system makers whose memory is specified for their own servers and workstations, which makes it a sensible match when you are replacing a module in one of their machines.

Also in our range: AFOX and GOODRAM.

DDR3 and older memory FAQ

Can I put DDR3 memory in a DDR2 slot?

No. DDR3 and DDR2 modules have the notch in a different position, so they do not fit each other's slots, and the electrical requirements differ as well. You need the same generation that your motherboard supports.

Is DDR3L the same as DDR3?

Not exactly. DDR3L is a low-voltage version of DDR3 and uses the same 240-pin DIMM or SO-DIMM layout. Many systems built for DDR3L accept standard DDR3, but you should check your manual, as some boards or laptops accept only one of the two.

Can I use ECC memory in a normal PC?

Usually not. Most desktop motherboards and processors are designed for non-ECC modules, and ECC modules may not work at all or may run without error correction. ECC memory is intended for servers and workstations that list support for it.

How much DDR3 memory do I need?

For basic office work and web browsing on an older PC, 4 GB is a workable minimum and 8 GB gives more room for several programs. Servers and virtual machines can use 16 GB modules. Check how much memory your system can support before buying, because older platforms often have a limit.
