DDR5 memory

DDR5 memory

DDR5 memory for desktop PCs, laptops, workstations and servers: over 400 modules, mostly 288-pin DIMM kits and single sticks for desktops, plus some SO-DIMM and CAMM modules for laptops. Brands in our range include Kingston, Corsair, Patriot Memory and G.SKILL. It suits anyone building a new system or upgrading a platform that supports DDR5.

How to choose DDR5 memory

Form factor and platform. Desktop PCs use 288-pin DIMM modules, while laptops and mini PCs use 262-pin SO-DIMM. CAMM is a newer laptop format that is not interchangeable with either, so check what your device accepts. DDR5 does not fit DDR4 slots, so the motherboard must be a DDR5 model.

Capacity and layout. Our range runs from 8 GB to 128 GB, with 16 GB and 32 GB the sizes you will see most often. Gaming PCs are comfortable with 32 GB, while video editing, virtual machines and large projects benefit from 64 GB or more. Two matched modules, such as 2 x 16 GB, normally run in dual channel, which gives more bandwidth than a single stick of the same total size.

Speed and latency. Many modules in our range run at 5600, 6000 or 6400 MT/s, and a few older-spec kits sit at 5200 MT/s. CAS latency is listed as a number such as 30, 36 or 40. Compare speed and latency together: a faster kit with a higher CAS number can perform similarly to a slower kit with a lower one. Your processor and motherboard also set the speed you can actually use.

Voltage and profiles. The standard DDR5 voltage is 1.1 V, and faster kits often need 1.25 V, 1.35 V or more, which is why you will find 1.4 V modules too. Faster kits usually rely on an XMP profile (Intel boards) or EXPO profile (AMD boards) that you switch on in the BIOS. Without it the memory runs at a lower default speed.

Buffered or unbuffered. Almost all desktop and laptop modules are unbuffered. Registered (buffered) modules are made for servers and some workstations and only work on boards that support them, so do not mix them up with consumer kits.

DDR5 memory brands we carry

  • Kingston: the largest brand in our DDR5 range, known for the FURY gaming line as well as plain ValueRAM modules for everyday systems.
  • Corsair: makes the Vengeance and Dominator lines, which are popular for their heat spreaders and RGB lighting options.
  • Patriot Memory: sells the Viper gaming range alongside simpler desktop and laptop modules.
  • G.SKILL: known for the Trident Z5 kits, which are aimed at enthusiasts who want high speeds and tight timings.
  • Crucial: the consumer memory brand of chip maker Micron, often chosen for straightforward, standard-profile upgrades.
  • ADATA: sells its performance modules under the XPG name.
  • TEAMGROUP: offers the T-Force gaming line of DDR5 kits.
  • V-Color: specialises in overclocking memory and kits for high-end workstation platforms.

Also in our range: Goodram, KLEVV, Lexar and Silicon Power.

DDR5 memory FAQ

Can I use DDR5 memory in a DDR4 motherboard?

No. DDR5 and DDR4 modules have different notch positions and electrical designs, so they cannot be swapped. You need a motherboard with DDR5 slots, such as recent Intel boards that support DDR5 or AMD AM5 boards.

How much DDR5 RAM do I need?

16 GB is enough for general use and light gaming, but 32 GB is a sensible choice for most modern gaming and multitasking. Choose 64 GB or more for video editing, 3D work, virtual machines or large datasets. Two modules in a matched kit usually give better performance than one large stick.

Is 6000 MT/s DDR5 better than 5600 MT/s?

6000 MT/s offers more bandwidth on paper, but the real gain depends on the workload and on CAS latency. Games and some creative applications benefit a little, while office tasks show almost no difference. Make sure your processor and motherboard can run the faster speed stably.

Is there DDR5 memory for laptops?

Yes, laptops use DDR5 SO-DIMM modules, and some newer models use CAMM. Check your laptop's manual or specification sheet first, because many thin models have soldered memory that cannot be upgraded. Also confirm which form factor and maximum capacity the device supports.
