Memory

Memory

Memory modules for laptops, desktops and servers, covering DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5, for anyone upgrading or repairing a computer. Brands in our range include G.Skill, Kingston, Corsair and Crucial, alongside original Dell, Lenovo and HP modules. A handful of memory cards and USB flash drives are listed here too.

How to choose memory

Memory generation. DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable, and each has a differently placed notch so it will not fit the wrong slot. Check your motherboard or laptop specification first, then browse the matching DDR3 and older, DDR4 or DDR5 section.

Form factor. Desktops use full-size DIMMs, while laptops and many mini PCs use the shorter SO-DIMM. Laptop memory is the largest subcategory in our range, so check the module type before you compare anything else. Servers usually need their own modules, often ECC or registered types.

Capacity and kits. Buy memory as a matched kit of two modules where your board supports dual-channel, because it gives better bandwidth than a single stick. Check the maximum capacity and the number of slots your system supports before deciding. Many everyday systems are comfortable with 16 GB, while video editing, virtual machines and heavy multitasking benefit from 32 GB or more.

Speed and latency. Speed is quoted in MT/s, and your processor and motherboard set the ceiling. Faster kits only run at their rated speed once an XMP or EXPO profile is enabled in the BIOS, so paying extra for a kit your platform cannot support gains you nothing.

ECC and server compatibility. Servers and workstations often need ECC or registered memory, and the vendor's compatibility list matters more than raw speed. Match the exact module type to your server model, as mixing types can stop the system booting.

Memory brands we carry

  • G.Skill: known for enthusiast desktop kits such as the Trident Z range, with high-speed DDR4 and DDR5 and XMP or EXPO profiles.
  • Kingston: sells both the FURY gaming line and the ValueRAM range for everyday desktops, laptops and servers.
  • Corsair: makes the Vengeance and Dominator ranges, popular in gaming and custom-built PCs.
  • Crucial: the consumer brand of memory maker Micron, well regarded for straightforward upgrades for laptops and desktops.
  • Patriot Memory: offers the Viper gaming series alongside budget-friendly standard modules.
  • Samsung: designs its own DRAM chips and is also a familiar name for memory cards and flash storage.
  • Dell, Lenovo, HP Inc and HP Enterprise: original modules for their own laptops, desktops and servers, which suits owners who want exact manufacturer compatibility.

Also in our range: 2-Power and CoreParts. The subcategories also include server memory and a few memory cards and USB flash drives.

Memory FAQ

How do I find out which RAM my computer takes?

Check the manual or the manufacturer's specification page for the memory generation (DDR3, DDR4 or DDR5), the module type (DIMM or SO-DIMM) and the maximum capacity. Free tools such as CPU-Z also show the installed modules and their speed. Searching with your exact laptop or motherboard model usually brings up compatible options.

Can I mix DDR4 and DDR5 memory?

No, DDR4 and DDR5 cannot be mixed or swapped. The modules have different notch positions and electrical designs, so a DDR5 module will not fit a DDR4 slot. Your motherboard supports only one generation.

How much RAM do I need?

For general use, browsing and office work, 8 GB is workable and 16 GB is more comfortable. Gaming, photo and video editing and running virtual machines are better served by 32 GB or more. Always check the maximum your system supports first.

What is the difference between DIMM and SO-DIMM?

DIMM is the full-size module used in desktop computers, while SO-DIMM is the smaller version used in laptops and many mini PCs. They are not interchangeable because of the different size and pin layout. Choose the type that matches your device.
