Industrial and DIN rail power supplies

Industrial and DIN rail power supplies

Industrial and DIN rail power supplies convert mains AC into stable low-voltage DC for control cabinets, networking equipment, security systems and automation panels. They suit electricians, system integrators and anyone powering equipment mounted on a rail. Our range centres on DIN rail units from PULS and MEAN WELL, with models from Allied Telesis, MikroTik and SATEL alongside.

How to choose an industrial power supply

Output voltage. Match the voltage to the equipment you are powering. 24 V DC is the usual standard for PLCs, sensors and relays, while 12 V and 48 V are common for some networking and telecom devices. If the cable run is long, an adjustable output lets you compensate for voltage drop.

Power and current. Add up the current draw of every load, then choose a unit with roughly 20 to 30 per cent headroom. Motors and relays draw much more at start-up, so check whether the supply can deliver a short-term power boost. A supply that runs well below its rating also stays cooler, which helps its lifespan.

Input supply. Most units accept single-phase mains across a wide voltage range, which helps where the supply is unstable. Three-phase and DC-input models exist for larger cabinets, so check what feeds your panel before ordering. Look at the recommended input fuse and the inrush current as well.

Mounting and environment. Standard DIN rail supplies clip onto a 35 mm TS35 rail. Check the operating temperature range and the derating curve, because output power falls as the surrounding temperature rises. Leave space around the unit for airflow, and look for short-circuit, overload and overvoltage protection, plus a DC-OK signal if your system needs to monitor the supply.

Brands we carry

  • PULS: a German manufacturer that specialises in DIN rail power supplies, best known for its Dimension series used in industrial control cabinets.
  • MEAN WELL: a Taiwanese maker of standard power supplies, known for a very large catalogue that includes DIN rail, enclosed and open-frame units.

Also in our range: Allied Telesis, MikroTik, SATEL and Gembird.

Industrial and DIN rail power supplies: frequently asked questions

What is a DIN rail power supply?

A DIN rail power supply is a mains-to-DC converter built to clip onto a standard 35 mm metal rail inside a cabinet or panel. It feeds low-voltage equipment such as controllers, sensors, switches and security modules. Its housing, terminals and protections are designed for permanent installation rather than desktop use.

Which voltage should I choose, 12 V, 24 V or 48 V?

Choose the voltage printed on the equipment you are powering. 24 V DC is the most widely used in industrial automation, so it is the usual starting point for control panels. Some network and telecom devices need 12 V or 48 V, and using the wrong voltage can damage them.

How much power rating do I need?

Choose a supply rated for about 20 to 30 per cent more than the total power your loads draw. This leaves room for start-up surges, temperature derating and future additions. Add up the current of every connected device first, then compare it with the continuous output current of the supply.

Can I use a normal PC power supply instead?

A PC power supply is not a suitable substitute in most industrial installations. It is designed for the multiple voltage rails of a computer, cannot be mounted on a DIN rail and lacks the protections and temperature ratings of industrial units. For control cabinets, a purpose-built DIN rail supply with the right output voltage is the safer choice.
