PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs

PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs are M.2 solid state drives for the newest motherboards, built for fast sequential transfers in workstations, high-end gaming PCs and content creation machines. There are currently no models listed in this category. Shoppers can compare PCIe 4.0 drives in the wider M.2 SSDs category in the meantime.

How to choose a PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD

Motherboard support. Check that your board has an M.2 slot wired for PCIe 5.0, because a PCIe 5.0 drive in a PCIe 4.0 slot still works but runs at the slower speed. Some boards give PCIe 5.0 only to the slot nearest the processor, so read the manual before deciding which slot to use.

Cooling. PCIe 5.0 drives run hotter than earlier generations and can slow themselves down when they overheat. Many motherboards include an M.2 heatsink, and some drives ship with their own, so check that the combined height fits under your graphics card or cooler.

Capacity and endurance. Pick 1 TB as a minimum for a system drive, and 2 TB or 4 TB if you edit video or keep large game libraries. Compare the endurance rating (TBW, terabytes written) as well, since heavy writing, such as video editing or scratch disks, wears a drive faster than everyday use.

Real-world speed. Quoted sequential speeds only matter if your work moves large files, such as raw video, big datasets or virtual machine images. Game loading and everyday tasks depend more on random performance and the rest of the system, so the gain over a good PCIe 4.0 drive is often small.

Form factor. Most desktop drives use the M.2 2280 size (22 mm wide, 80 mm long). Confirm that your motherboard slot accepts this length before ordering.

Types of PCIe 5.0 drive to look for

  • Drives with a heatsink: The cooler is fitted at the factory, which suits boards without a built-in M.2 heatsink, though a tall design may not clear every graphics card.
  • Bare drives: These have no cooler and work best when your motherboard already has a heatsink for the slot, which keeps the height low.
  • Drives with DRAM cache: A dedicated cache chip usually helps keep write speeds steady during long transfers, which matters more for professional work than for casual use.

No brands are listed in this category at the moment. The M.2 SSDs category above it shows the drives currently available.

PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD FAQ

Is a PCIe 5.0 SSD worth it?

It is worth it if you regularly move very large files and your motherboard supports PCIe 5.0. For general use and most gaming, a PCIe 4.0 drive feels almost the same and usually runs cooler. The extra speed pays off mainly in video editing, data processing and heavy file transfers.

Will a PCIe 5.0 SSD work in a PCIe 4.0 slot?

Yes, PCIe 5.0 drives are backwards compatible with PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 3.0 slots. The drive then runs at the speed of the slot, so you lose the benefit of the faster standard. It is a sensible choice only if you plan to upgrade your motherboard later.

Do PCIe 5.0 SSDs need a heatsink?

Yes, a heatsink is strongly recommended. These drives generate more heat than PCIe 4.0 models and can reduce their speed to protect themselves when they get too hot. Use the heatsink built into your motherboard or buy a drive that includes one.

Can I use a PCIe 5.0 SSD in a laptop or console?

Usually not to full effect. Most laptops have PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 M.2 slots and limited space for cooling, so a PCIe 5.0 drive gains little there. Check your device's specifications for the supported PCIe generation and drive size before buying.
