Power banks are portable batteries that charge laptops, phones and tablets when no wall socket is nearby, which suits commuters, students and anyone who works while travelling. Our range covers models from XTAR, Anker and Lenovo, with capacity quoted in mAh or watt-hours.
How to choose a power bank for a laptop
Capacity. Capacity is shown in mAh or Wh, and both appear in our range (for example 10000 mAh and 38.5 Wh). A 10000 mAh bank can charge a phone several times, but a laptop battery is usually larger, so expect only a partial laptop charge. Some of the stored energy is lost in conversion, so the usable amount is lower than the figure on the label.
Output power. Compare the maximum output in watts with the rating of your laptop charger. Many thin laptops charge from 45 to 65 W over USB-C, while larger models need 90 W or more. A bank with lower output may charge the laptop slowly, or not at all while it is under heavy load.
Ports and connectors. USB-C with Power Delivery is the usual route for modern laptops. Some older models use a round DC plug and need a bank with a matching connector or an adapter. Extra USB-A ports let you charge a phone at the same time, though the output is often shared between ports.
Size and weight. More capacity means more weight. A 10000 mAh bank slips into a jacket pocket, while laptop-class units are closer to the size of a small book. Think about whether you will carry it every day or only on longer trips.
Travel limits. Airlines generally allow power banks up to 100 Wh in cabin baggage without special approval, and they must not be packed in checked luggage. The Wh figure is therefore the one to check if you fly with it.
Power bank brands we carry
- XTAR: known for chargers and batteries for rechargeable lithium-ion cells, so its power banks come from a company that focuses on battery charging.
- Anker: a charging specialist best known for USB chargers, cables and power banks, including the PowerCore series.
- Lenovo: a laptop manufacturer, so its power banks are a natural match for Lenovo and ThinkPad owners, although USB-C models from any maker can often charge other brands of laptop too.
Power banks: frequently asked questions
Can a power bank charge a laptop?
Yes, as long as the power bank has enough output power and a suitable port. Most modern laptops charge over USB-C with Power Delivery, so look for a bank that offers at least the wattage of your original charger. A weaker bank may charge very slowly or only keep the battery level steady.
How many mAh do I need to charge a laptop?
Most laptops need a capacity well above 10000 mAh for a full charge. Laptop batteries are commonly rated between 40 and 70 Wh, and a 10000 mAh power bank stores roughly 37 Wh before conversion losses. A 10000 mAh model is better suited to phones, tablets and topping up a laptop in an emergency.
How do I convert mAh to Wh?
Multiply the mAh figure by the battery voltage, then divide by 1000. Most power banks use lithium-ion cells rated at about 3.7 V, so 10000 mAh works out at roughly 37 Wh. Comparing power banks in Wh is more accurate, because it does not depend on the voltage.
Can I take a power bank on a plane?
Yes, in your cabin baggage, but not in checked luggage. Airlines generally allow power banks up to 100 Wh without approval, and larger ones usually need permission from the airline. Check the Wh rating printed on the device before you travel.
