Laptop screens 16-17.3 inch

Laptop screens in the 16 to 17.3 inch range are replacement display panels for larger notebooks, bought by people repairing a cracked, dim, flickering or lined display. Sizes include 16, 17 and 17.3 inch, and panels differ in resolution, connector, refresh rate and finish. Matching the exact panel to your laptop matters more than matching the size alone.

How to choose a replacement laptop screen

Exact model compatibility. A screen that is the right diagonal size can still be the wrong part. Look up the panel part number printed on a label on the back of the old screen, or the laptop's full model number, and match it against the product listing.

Resolution. Replace like with like unless you know your laptop supports something else. Most 17.3 inch laptops use Full HD (1920 x 1080), while some 16 inch models use taller formats such as 1920 x 1200 or 2560 x 1600. A panel with a different resolution may not work with the laptop's graphics settings or cable.

Connector type and pin count. Most modern laptop panels use a thin flat cable, commonly 30 pin eDP, while older machines use 40 pin LVDS. The plug position (left, right or centre) and pin count must match your cable, otherwise the screen will not connect or will stay blank.

Refresh rate and panel type. Standard office laptops use 60 Hz panels, while gaming laptops often use 120, 144 or 165 Hz. IPS panels give wider viewing angles and better colour than basic TN panels, which matters for photo editing and for sharing the screen with others. Keep to the original refresh rate unless the laptop's graphics and cable support the faster panel.

Finish and touch. Matte panels reduce reflections in bright rooms, while glossy ones look richer but pick up glare. A touchscreen laptop needs a touch-enabled replacement, since a non-touch panel will remove that function.

Panel makers behind laptop screens

  • LG Display: known for IPS panels used in many thin laptops, with good colour accuracy and wide viewing angles.
  • Samsung Display: known for OLED laptop panels, which offer deep blacks and high contrast.
  • AU Optronics (AUO): a major supplier of laptop LCDs, including high refresh rate panels for gaming laptops.
  • BOE: one of the largest panel makers in the world, supplying displays to many laptop manufacturers in several sizes and resolutions.
  • Innolux (Chimei Innolux): makes laptop and monitor panels, commonly found in mainstream 15 to 17 inch notebooks.

These are the companies that usually make the panel, which is often different from the brand name on the laptop lid, so always check the panel part number rather than the laptop brand.

Frequently asked questions about laptop screens 16-17.3 inch

How do I find the right replacement screen for my laptop?

Use the panel part number printed on the back of your current screen, which usually starts with letters such as LP, NV, B or LM followed by digits. If you cannot remove the screen yet, the laptop's full model number from the underside label will also help narrow down compatible panels. Check size, resolution and connector against the listing before ordering.

How is a laptop screen size measured?

Laptop screen size is the diagonal measurement of the visible display area, from one corner to the opposite corner, usually given in inches. The frame around the screen is not included. A 17.3 inch panel is therefore slightly smaller in width than the laptop's lid.

Can I fit a screen with a higher refresh rate or resolution?

Sometimes, but only if the connector, pin count and the laptop's graphics hardware support it. Many laptops are built around one panel specification, and a mismatch can cause a blank screen or flickering. Replacing with the original specification is the safest option.

Is replacing a laptop screen difficult?

It is a manageable job for many people with basic tools and patience, though difficulty varies by model. You usually need to remove the bezel, unscrew the panel and unplug a fragile display cable. Disconnect the battery or power first, and take photos as you go so reassembly is easier.
