Studio lighting and backdrops

Studio lighting and backdrops for photographers, videographers, streamers and online sellers who want controlled light at home or in a small studio. The range of over 70 products is led by NEEWER and GODOX, with PULUZ covering smaller setups, and includes lights, light-shaping accessories and backgrounds.

How to choose studio lighting and backdrops

Continuous light or flash. Continuous LED lights show exactly how the light falls on your subject and work for both video and stills. Studio flashes and strobes deliver far more power in a split second, which suits portraits and fast-moving subjects, but they only help with photography.

Power and working space. A small LED panel is enough for a desk, a webcam or small product shots. Full-length portraits, groups and larger rooms need stronger lights, and flash power is usually given in watt-seconds. Buy more power than you think you need, because you can always dim a light but cannot make a weak one brighter.

Mount and modifiers. Many studio heads use a Bowens-style mount, so softboxes, reflectors and beauty dishes from different makers often fit. Check the mount type before buying any modifier. A large softbox gives soft, flattering light on skin, while a standard reflector gives harder, more contrasty results.

Colour quality. For video and product photography, look for a high CRI or TLCI rating, which shows how accurately a light renders colour. Adjustable colour temperature, typically from warm tungsten to daylight, lets you match a window or other lamps in the room. RGB lights add coloured effects, but accurate white light matters more for everyday work.

Backdrop size and material. Headshots and product shots need a backdrop about 1.5 to 2 m wide. Full-length portraits need a wider and taller one, plus a stand or support frame. Fabric backdrops pack down easily but need steaming or ironing, while vinyl and paper wipe clean and stay flat.

Studio lighting brands we carry

  • NEEWER: known for affordable LED panels, softboxes and light stands, which makes it a common first choice when building a home studio.
  • GODOX: known for studio flashes and its wireless flash system, which lets you control several lights from one transmitter on the camera.
  • PULUZ: known for low-cost photography accessories, including small light boxes and backgrounds for tabletop and product shots.

Studio lighting and backdrops FAQ

What lighting do I need for a home photo studio?

Two lights are enough to start: a main light with a softbox and a second light for fill or background separation. Add a stand for each light and a backdrop that suits your subject. A reflector is a cheap extra that lifts shadows without a third light.

Are LED lights better than flash for beginners?

LED lights are easier for beginners because you see the lighting effect live and can adjust it before you shoot. They are also usable for video. Flash gives more power and freezes movement, so it becomes the better choice once you shoot portraits or larger spaces regularly.

What size backdrop do I need for portraits?

For headshots and half-length portraits, a backdrop about 1.5 m wide is usually enough. Full-length portraits and couples need roughly 2 to 3 m of width, and a stand that holds it. Remember that your subject should stand well away from the backdrop to avoid shadows on it.

Can I use the same lights for photos and video?

Continuous LED lights work for both photos and video. Studio flashes only fire briefly, so they are not suitable for video, although many have a small modelling lamp for previewing the light. If you shoot both, LED lights are the simpler single setup.
