Descalers and water filters for coffee machines and other kitchen appliances: this category covers water filters, descaling products, cleaning tablets and cleaning brushes. It suits anyone who wants to keep a machine free of limescale and running properly. Leading brands in our range include Philips, Siemens, Brita and Wilfa.
Many items are made for specific coffee machine families, so compatibility matters more than anything else here.
How to choose a descaler or water filter
Machine compatibility. Check the brand and model of your appliance first. Many products in our range are made for particular machines, with Siemens, Philips and Saeco compatibility listed. A filter cartridge that does not fit your water tank is of no use, so compare the model number in your manual with the product details.
Product type. Water filters reduce limescale before it forms, while descalers and cleaning tablets remove deposits that have already built up. A cleaning brush deals with parts that a descaling cycle cannot reach. Our range includes all four, and many owners use a filter together with occasional descaling.
Water hardness. The harder your tap water, the faster scale forms, and the more often you will need to descale or replace a filter. Your municipality can usually tell you how hard the water is in your area. In hard-water areas a filter is worth considering from the start.
Manufacturer approval. Use the care products that your machine's manual recommends. Some brands specify their own descaling solution or tablets, and using something different can affect the cleaning programme or, in some cases, a warranty. When the manual names a product type, such as liquid descaler or tablets, follow it.
Brands we carry
- Philips: sells filters and care products for its own coffee machines and for Saeco models, which Philips also makes.
- Siemens: offers descaling tablets and filters designed for its bean-to-cup coffee machines, which makes up a good share of the Siemens compatibility in our range.
- Brita: best known for jug and cartridge water filters that reduce limescale and chlorine in drinking water.
- Bosch: part of the same group as Siemens (BSH), so its care products follow a similar approach for its own appliances.
- DeLonghi: a long-established maker of coffee machines, with care products intended for its own machines.
Also in our range: Wilfa, Berkel, Gastroback and Krups.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I descale my coffee machine?
Most manufacturers suggest descaling every few months, but the right interval depends on water hardness and how much you use the machine. Many modern machines show a descaling reminder. In hard-water areas, expect to descale more often.
Do I still need to descale if I use a water filter?
Yes, although less often. A filter reduces the minerals that form limescale but does not remove them completely. Filters also need replacing on schedule, usually every few weeks or after a set volume of water, otherwise they stop working properly.
Can I use vinegar instead of a descaler?
It is not recommended for most machines. Many manufacturers advise against vinegar because it can damage seals and leave a lingering taste. A product made for your type of appliance is safer and is designed to rinse out cleanly.
Will any descaling tablet work in my machine?
Not necessarily. Tablets and liquids differ in formulation, and some machines are programmed around a specific product. Check your manual and the brand compatibility listed on the product before you buy.
