How to choose a video cable or adapter
Connectors and gender. Check the port on the source (laptop, graphics card, console) and on the screen, then pick the cable with matching ends. Our range includes cables with DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort or HDMI on one end, and HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA (D-Sub) or 3 x RCA on the other. Adapters come with male or female ends, so look at whether you need a short extension-style adapter or a full cable.
DisplayPort version, resolution and refresh rate. The cable must support the signal your screen can display. In our range you will find DisplayPort versions 1.1a, 1.2, 1.2a and 1.4, with maximum resolutions up to 4096 x 2160 pixels and refresh rates of 60, 120 and 240 Hz. For a 4K monitor or a fast gaming screen, choose a newer version such as 1.4. For a basic office monitor at 1920 x 1080 pixels, an older version is enough.
Signal direction and type. VGA is an analogue signal, while DisplayPort and HDMI are digital, so conversion between them depends on direction. Most simple cables work from a DisplayPort source to an HDMI display, and the reverse often needs an active converter. VGA carries video only, so you will need a separate audio connection if the screen has speakers.
Cable length. Lengths in our range run from a 0.15 m adapter lead to cables of 1 m, 1.5 m, 1.8 m and 2 m. Choose the shortest length that reaches comfortably, because very long passive cables can struggle with high resolutions and refresh rates.

Can I connect DisplayPort to HDMI?
Yes, a DisplayPort to HDMI cable or adapter connects a DisplayPort source to an HDMI screen. Our range includes cables with DisplayPort on one end and HDMI on the other. Going the other way, from an HDMI source to a DisplayPort monitor, usually needs an active converter.
Does a VGA cable carry sound?
No, VGA carries video only. If you connect a computer to a screen or projector over VGA, you need a separate audio cable, usually a 3.5 mm lead, for sound. HDMI and DisplayPort connections can carry audio together with the picture.
Which DisplayPort version do I need for 4K?
DisplayPort 1.2 is enough for 4K at 60 Hz. If you want higher refresh rates at high resolutions, DisplayPort 1.4 is the safer choice. Check that your graphics card and monitor support the same version, as the slowest part limits the result.
Does cable length affect picture quality?
It can, particularly at high resolutions and refresh rates. Short cables of 1 to 2 m rarely cause problems, while longer passive cables are more likely to lose signal or cause flickering. Buy the shortest cable that reaches your screen comfortably.
