How to choose a canister vacuum cleaner
Bagged or bagless. The dirt separating methods in our range include cyclonic, filter-based and a few models that combine both. A cyclonic machine has a container you empty and rinse, so there are no bags to buy. A bagged machine keeps dust sealed inside until you throw the bag away, which many people with allergies find cleaner to handle.
Filtration. HEPA is the most common type of air filtration listed in our range, alongside EPA, allergy and hygiene filters. A HEPA filter traps very fine particles such as pollen and dust mite debris, but only if the vacuum is well sealed. It is worth prioritising if anyone at home has asthma or dust allergies.
Power and noise. Maximum input power in our range mostly sits between 600 W and 900 W. This figure is the electricity the motor draws, not the suction itself, so nozzle design and filter condition matter as well. Listed noise levels run from the high 60s to around 79 dB, and a lower figure is noticeable if you vacuum in a flat or early in the day.
Dust capacity, cord and reach. Dust capacity ranges from about 1.3 L to 5 L, with 1.5 L the most frequent size listed. A bigger container means fewer trips to the bin in a large house. Cords are typically 5 to 9 m, and the operating radius, which includes the hose and wand, is often 9 to 12 m, so measure the distance between your sockets and the furthest corner you need to reach.

Is a bagless canister vacuum better than a bagged one?
Neither is better in every situation. A bagless cyclonic vacuum saves you buying bags and shows when the container is full, while a bagged model keeps dust contained when you dispose of it. If emptying dust makes you sneeze, a bagged model is usually the more comfortable choice.
What does a HEPA filter do in a vacuum cleaner?
A HEPA filter captures very fine particles that ordinary filters let through, including pollen, pet dander and dust mite debris. It cleans the air leaving the vacuum rather than improving suction. For the best results the machine needs good seals, and the filter needs washing or replacing as the manufacturer recommends.
How much dust capacity do I need?
For a flat or a small house, around 1.5 L to 2 L is usually enough, and it is the size most often listed in our range. Larger homes, pets or thick carpets fill the container faster, so a 4 L or 5 L model saves frequent emptying. Bagged models often hold more dust than their listed container size suggests, depending on the bag.
How long should the cord and operating radius be?
A cord of 6 m or more is a sensible minimum, and many models in our range offer 7 to 9 m. The operating radius is the total distance you can reach from the socket, including the hose and wand. A radius of 9 to 10 m covers a typical living room and hallway without moving the plug, and a larger radius suits open-plan homes or stairs.
