How to choose rechargeable batteries
Chemistry and size. NiMH cells in AA and AAA sizes fit remotes, torches, toys and wireless peripherals. Lithium-ion cells such as the 18650 suit high-drain torches and vaping or power-bank builds, while LiPo packs are made for RC cars, aircraft and drones. Check that the physical size matches your device before anything else.
Capacity. Capacity is given in mAh and tells you how long the battery runs between charges. A higher figure means longer runtime, but LiPo packs with high capacity are also larger and heavier, which matters in a drone or a small model.
Voltage and cell count. NiMH cells deliver 1.2 V each, which works in most devices designed for 1.5 V alkaline cells. LiPo packs are described by cell count, such as 2S or 4S, and your speed controller or device must be rated for that voltage.
Discharge rate. For LiPo packs, the C rating shows how much current the battery can deliver safely. Choose a pack whose rating covers the peak current of your motor, otherwise it will heat up and wear out quickly.
Charger and connector. NiMH and lithium cells need different chargers, and LiPo packs should be charged with a balance charger. Check the connector type on the pack as well, since XT60, Deans and similar plugs are not interchangeable without adapters.

How many times can a rechargeable battery be recharged?
It depends on the chemistry and how the battery is used. Quality NiMH cells are commonly rated for several hundred to over a thousand cycles, while LiPo packs usually last fewer cycles if they are discharged hard. Avoiding full discharge and extreme heat extends the life of any type.
Can I use rechargeable AA batteries instead of alkaline ones?
Yes, in most devices. NiMH AA cells provide 1.2 V rather than 1.5 V, which is fine for remotes, torches, toys and wireless mice. A few devices with strict voltage requirements may show a low battery warning sooner, so check the manual.
What does the C rating on a LiPo battery mean?
The C rating is the maximum continuous discharge rate relative to capacity. Multiply the C rating by the capacity in amp hours to find the current the pack can supply. For example, a 5000 mAh pack rated 50C can supply up to 250 A in theory, though real use should stay well below that.
How should I store LiPo and lithium-ion batteries?
Store them partly charged, in a cool, dry place away from flammable materials. LiPo packs are best kept in a fireproof bag or box, and should never be left charging unattended. Do not use a pack that is swollen, punctured or damaged.
