Document shredders

Document shredders

Document shredders for home offices, small businesses and busy workplaces, from simple strip-cut models to cross-cut and micro-cut machines. Our range of over 100 models includes Fellowes, Rexel, HSM and Tracer.

The right model depends mainly on how sensitive your paper is and how much you shred in one go.

How to choose a document shredder

Security level and cut type. Security is usually given as a P-level under the DIN 66399 standard, where a higher number means smaller particles. In our range, P-4 is the level listed most often, with P-2, P-5 and other levels also available. Strip-cut machines are quick and simple but leave readable strips, so cross-cut, particle-cut or micro-cut models are the sensible choice for bank statements, contracts and payroll.

Sheet capacity and duty cycle. Capacity is the number of sheets per pass, and the duty cycle is how long the motor can run before it must cool down. Duty cycles in our range run from about 5 minutes to 30 minutes. A short cycle is fine for occasional use at home, while a shared office needs a longer one so the shredder does not stop halfway through a stack.

Bin size. Basket volumes in our range go from about 13 litres to 44 litres. A small bin under a desk needs emptying often, whereas a 20 litre or larger bin suits regular use. Cross-cut and micro-cut shredding produces more particles that pack down tightly, so a bigger bin saves you trips.

Noise level. Listed noise levels range from around 50 dB to 72 dB. If the shredder will sit in an open-plan office or a room where people work or sleep, look for a figure in the 50s. A louder machine is easier to accept in a print room or separate area.

Extra materials and controls. Some shredders also take staples, credit cards or CDs, but not all do, so check the product details. Controls in our range include touch panels, buttons and sliders. Jam protection and auto-reverse are worth looking for if you often shred thick stacks.

Document shredder FAQ

Which security level do I need for confidential documents?

P-4 is a sound level for most personal and business paperwork, such as invoices, bank statements and contracts. It cuts paper into small cross-cut or particle pieces that are hard to reassemble. Choose P-5 or higher only if you handle highly sensitive material or your organisation requires it.

Is a cross-cut shredder better than a strip-cut shredder?

Cross-cut is more secure, because it cuts paper in two directions into small pieces. Strip-cut shredders produce long strips that can be pieced back together, but they are often simpler and cheaper to run. For anything with personal or financial details, cross-cut or micro-cut is the safer choice.

How long can a shredder run without stopping?

It depends on the duty cycle, which is shown in the specifications. In our range it runs from about 5 minutes to 30 minutes, after which the motor needs to cool down. If you often shred large batches, pick a model with a longer duty cycle.

Can a shredder handle credit cards, CDs and staples?

Only some models can. Many office shredders accept staples and paper clips, and some also cut cards or discs, but others do not. Check the product details before buying, as forcing unsupported items through can damage the cutting blades.
