Laptop and PC camera modules

Laptop and PC camera modules cover USB webcams, replacement internal camera modules and conference-style cameras for video calls, online lessons and meeting rooms. They suit anyone whose built-in camera is poor, damaged or missing, and teams setting up a shared meeting space. Models and brands are added to this page as the range is updated.

How to choose a laptop or PC camera module

Resolution and frame rate. Full HD (1080p) at 30 frames per second is a sensible starting point for video calls, and it is a clear step up from the 720p cameras found in many older laptops. Higher resolutions such as 4K mostly matter for recording or streaming, since most meeting software compresses the picture anyway.

Field of view and focus. A narrow field of view of around 65 to 80 degrees suits one person at a desk. A wider angle of 90 degrees or more fits several people around a table, but it also shows more of the room behind you. Autofocus helps if you move about or hold up documents to the camera.

Connection and compatibility. Most external webcams connect over USB and work without drivers on Windows, macOS and Linux. Check which USB port you have free, and whether a cable or a clip is long enough for your monitor or a wall mount. Replacement internal modules are different: they must match the exact laptop model, so check the part number before buying.

Microphone and sound. Many webcams include a built-in microphone, but it picks up room echo and keyboard noise. If you take calls all day, a separate headset or a conference speakerphone usually gives clearer sound than any camera microphone.

Low light and privacy. A larger sensor and good automatic exposure make a visible difference in a dim home office. A physical privacy shutter is useful if the camera stays plugged in all the time.

Brands and what to look for

  • Established webcam makers: companies that focus on video calling peripherals usually offer a range from basic Full HD models to ones with autofocus and better low-light handling, and they tend to publish drivers and software for adjusting the picture.
  • Laptop manufacturers: original replacement camera modules are made to fit specific laptop series, so the model number matters more than the brand name on the box.
  • Conference camera specialists: these produce wide-angle cameras, often with speakers and microphones built in, designed for small and medium meeting rooms.

No specific brands are listed on this page yet, so check the product listings as they appear for the exact make and specifications.

Frequently asked questions about laptop and PC cameras

Is an external webcam better than a built-in laptop camera?

In most cases, yes. An external webcam usually has a better sensor and lens than the thin camera in a laptop lid, and you can position it at eye level. It also lets you keep using the laptop if the built-in camera fails.

Do I need 4K for video calls?

No. Full HD is enough for nearly all video calls, because meeting software typically reduces the video quality to save bandwidth. 4K is only worth paying for if you record content or stream and want room to crop the image.

Will a USB webcam work with my laptop or PC?

Almost certainly, if it has a free USB port. Most USB webcams are plug and play on Windows and macOS and need no extra software. Check the connector type, as some laptops only have USB-C and may need an adapter.

Can I replace the camera inside my laptop?

Sometimes. Many laptops have a camera module connected by a small cable behind the screen bezel, but access varies between models and may need the display opened. Look up the exact laptop model and part number first. If the repair looks difficult, a USB webcam is the simpler fix.
