Micro-USB and USB-B cables

Micro-USB and USB-B cables connect older phones, power banks, external hard drives, printers and scanners to a computer or charger. The category covers Micro-USB to USB-A charging and data leads, square-ended USB-B printer cables and Micro-USB adapters. It suits anyone replacing a worn lead or equipping a device that predates USB-C.

How to choose a Micro-USB or USB-B cable

Connector type. Check the port on your device before anything else. Micro-USB is the small, flat, trapezoid-shaped plug found on many older phones, e-readers, Bluetooth speakers and power banks. USB-B is the larger, squarish plug used on most printers, scanners and some audio interfaces. A wide Micro-B plug with a double connector is used by some USB 3.0 external hard drives, and it looks different from the standard version.

Data or charge only. Some cheap leads carry power but no data. If you want to transfer photos, sync a device or connect a printer, choose a cable that is clearly described as supporting data. For a simple wall charger or power bank, a charge-only lead is enough.

Length. Cables of about 1 metre suit most desks and wall sockets. Longer leads of 2 to 3 metres are useful for printers placed away from a computer or for charging while a phone is in use on the sofa. Very long USB cables can lose signal quality, so avoid going longer than you need.

USB version and speed. A USB 2.0 cable is fine for charging, printers and most phones. External drives with a wide Micro-B port need a USB 3.0 cable to reach their full transfer speed, and a USB 2.0 lead will still connect but run slower.

Build quality. Look for reinforced plugs at both ends, since the connector joint is where most cables fail. Braided sleeves resist tangling and fraying. Thicker internal wires carry more current, which helps a phone charge faster.

Cable types to look for

  • Micro-USB to USB-A: the standard lead for charging and syncing older phones, tablets, cameras and power banks from a wall adapter or computer.
  • USB-B to USB-A: the usual printer cable, also used for scanners, some audio interfaces and certain external devices.
  • Micro-B USB 3.0 to USB-A: made for external hard drives with the wider double plug, and it keeps USB 3.0 speeds.
  • Micro-USB adapters: small converters that let a Micro-USB device connect to a USB-C port or work with USB accessories through OTG.

When comparing similar cables, connector type, length and data support matter more than the manufacturer name, so check these on each product listing.

Frequently asked questions about Micro-USB and USB-B cables

What is the difference between Micro-USB and USB-B?

Micro-USB is a small plug for portable devices such as phones and power banks, while USB-B is a larger, squarish plug for printers and scanners. They are not interchangeable. Always match the cable to the port on the device end.

Can I use a Micro-USB cable for data transfer?

Yes, if the cable supports data. Many Micro-USB leads do, but some are sold for charging only. If transferring files matters, choose a lead described as a data and charging cable.

Which cable do I need for my printer?

Most printers with a USB connection use a USB-B to USB-A cable. Look at the square port on the back of the printer to confirm. Cables of 1.5 to 3 metres are common for this job.

Does a longer cable charge more slowly?

It can. A longer or thinner cable has more resistance, so a phone may charge a little slower than with a short, well-made lead. For the fastest charging, choose a shorter cable with sturdy wiring.
