HDMI cables

HDMI cables

HDMI cables for connecting monitors, TVs, projectors, laptops, games consoles and set-top boxes, from short standard leads to HDMI 2.1 and optical cables for long runs. Our range also covers Mini and Micro HDMI cables, adapters, extenders and couplers. Brands include Delock, InLine, ROLINE, LINDY and StarTech.com.

How to choose an HDMI cable

Speed rating. The cable must match the signal you want to send. For 4K at 60 Hz, look for High Speed or Premium High Speed cables. For 4K at 120 Hz, 8K or variable refresh rate on a modern console, choose an Ultra High Speed cable, which is what our HDMI 2.1 / 8K cables are made for.

Length and cable type. Short runs of a few metres work with a standard passive copper cable. Over longer distances the signal can degrade, so consider an active HDMI cable, or an optical (AOC) cable, which carries the signal as light and stays stable over long runs, for example behind walls or to a projector.

Connector type. Check the ports on both devices before ordering. Most TVs and monitors use full-size HDMI, but many cameras, tablets and compact laptops use Mini or Micro HDMI. In tight spaces behind a wall-mounted TV, angled and flat cables avoid sharp bends in the lead.

Extra features. If you connect a soundbar or AV receiver, check that the cable supports Ethernet and ARC or eARC. Adapters and converters are directional, so confirm which end is the source and which is the display. When a cable is too short, an extender or coupler can sometimes solve it, but a single longer cable is simpler.

HDMI cable FAQ

Which HDMI cable do I need for 4K?

A High Speed or Premium High Speed HDMI cable handles 4K at 60 Hz. For 4K at 120 Hz or 8K you need an Ultra High Speed cable. Check the packaging for the speed rating rather than relying on the version number alone.

Does a more expensive HDMI cable give a better picture?

No, not for digital HDMI signals. A cable either carries the signal correctly or it does not, so the picture is not sharper because of a higher price. What matters is the speed rating, build quality and length. Poorly made cables are more likely to cause flickering or dropouts at high resolutions.

How long can an HDMI cable be?

Passive copper cables work reliably for a few metres, and the limit depends on the resolution and the cable quality. For longer distances, use an active or optical HDMI cable, or an HDMI extender. Optical cables can cover much greater distances than copper at 4K.

Can I use a Mini or Micro HDMI cable instead of a standard one?

Only if the device has a matching port. Mini and Micro HDMI carry the same type of signal as full-size HDMI but use smaller connectors. Cables with a full-size plug on one end and a Mini or Micro plug on the other are the usual way to connect cameras and tablets to a monitor or TV.
